A major component of issuing a CHL to an applicant is the series of background checks one is processed through.

I did a search on "background check" and came up with 968 hits, and have spent the better part of an hour looking at those posts, but I can't find an answer.

My questions are what agencies does DPS contact for a background check? It sounds as though there are many. Are they both criminal(criminal history) and civil(state tax liens, child support, etc) related?

And are all of the requests for background checks electronically transmitted(like email for example), or is snail mail actually utilized?

From what I understand:

BG Check:
FBI
Any/All Counties you've lived in in the past 5 years

And they also request a copy of your birth certificate from wherever you were born.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, or left something out.

From what I understand, the 'Delay' check is the county one. For example, it has been said that for all of Harris County, they only have 1 commissioned officer to do ALL of the CHL BG Checks.
And no, the packet is Snail Mailed to the county, and the fingerprint card is snail mailed to the FBI (unless you do them FAST, electronically)

Hmmmmm., not so sure about all that ....

Unless something has changed that I am not aware of, DPS is STILL not yet set up to accept CHL applicant fingerprints electronically from the "FAST" people. They have numerous offices around the state, but only a select few have printers - required for the to-be-snail mailed cards.

It has been stated in at least one other threads and I assumed that those posters knew what they were talking about.

After reviewing the thread (again), It appears they may request a birth certificate if you were born on a military base overseas.
So I'm probably incorrect in my broad statement above. I'd like to amend it to read:
"They may request a copy of your birth certificate if they deem it necessary "

And yes, I know what happens when you Assume. I'll take the blame on that one ;)

Actually, dicion brings up a valid point....

According to the Texas Concealed Handgun Laws booklet I received in my packet from DPS:

GC 411.174. Application (a) An applicant for a license to carry a concealed handgun must submit to the director's designee described by Section 411.176:
(1) A completed application on a form provided by the department that requires only the information listed in Subsection (b);
(2) two recent color passport photographs of the applicant, except that an applicant who is younger than 21 years of age must submit two recent color passport photographs in profile of the applicant;
(3) a certified copy of the applicant's birth certificate or certified proof of age

If not a birth certificate, I really can't think of any other document that is certified, and shows proof of age....other than a certified birth certificate. Any suggestions?

I mean if I have a certified b.c., it can't hurt to send it in with the rest of my application, can it?

I think your Texas DL Serves as a valid proof of age, since you have to generally present your BC to get it.

But no, I'm sure sending it won't hurt anything. Except maybe your pocketbook for the extra 2oz to pay postage on :)

I do not recall sending either a birth certificate or passport with my application. I thought that the information on the notarized TR-100 had a birthday date that could be verified by a DL or passport. I think either could be construed as certified proof of age. When you buy a handgun from an FFL dealer, they use your DL to make sure you are of age.
