Cell Phone Protects Clerk From Knife Attack in Robbery

ROSWELL, Ga. — A Georgia liquor store clerk credits his police officer son with giving him two life-saving gifts — a cell phone and a gun.

Joseph Wescott says the phone he slipped into his shirt pocket stopped a knife to his chest when a robbery suspect attacked him at the store in a northern Atlanta suburb. He then reached under the counter for the .40-caliber handgun and shot the man.

"The knife that he had looked like it was about 10-foot long," the 67-year-old Wescott exclaimed.

When the suspect lunged at Wescott, he fell back and the knife struck the battery area of the phone, the clerk said. He then fired one shot at the man Monday night.

"That was the first time I had ever fired that gun," he said.

Police said Carlos JeanPeirre, 34, is recovering from non-life threatening wounds and faces multiple charges including aggravated assault and attempted robbery.

Wescott's son, Jason, said he gave both gifts to his father to keep him safe.

"Something like that can happen in a split second and it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it," Jason Wescott said.

After the attack, Joseph Wescot said he used his cell phone to call 911.
Note to self #1: start putting cell phone in shirt pocket

Note to self #2: for all the times that I carried but didn't need my gun, I never regretted having it, for it caused me no great inconvenience to do so, and I didn't know until I got home that I wouldn't need it.

My rule of thumb is, "First phone call wins." That means if there is an altercation get your "complaint" to the police first, and as quickly as possible. Others teach this as well.

The 2 gifts of life that keep on giving. That is truly a loving son. Both should be given a commendation medal. First the son, who thought of his father enough to give him those 2 life saving devices, and 2nd the brave father who had the intelligence and wherewithal to use them to save a life...his own.

Good article. Thanks for posting.

Reckon as how a liquor store or pawnshop clerk probably should be wearing a bullet proof vest in this day and time.

"That was the first time I had ever fired that gun," he said.

Could have at least taken his son to the range. Maybe he's comfortable and a good shot with other guns, but I can't imagine shooting my gun for the first time when I'm trying to save my life.

I agree. But he can't be that bad of a shot. Because the BG's in the hospital recovering from the gunshot wound.

A. Go shoot more and get more training so I won't be behind the power curve when badguy lunges at me with knife ready
B. Don't rely on cell phone in pocket to protect me from crazy
C. Don't talk to the anti-gun media about the shooting...tell all but FOX to pound sand (then tell FOX to pound sand too)
D. Center mass, Center mass, Center mass
E. Live to go home and hug my wife and kids
F. Praise God whether I am in a good time or bad time

All I have to do is reach up pick the button on the earbud and say "911" (nine-one-one) then its back to my two handed stance as I talk very calm to the 911 operator...

Ain't speed dialing great!!!

Just be very careful what you say...It is being recorded...

Another good note to yourself... :thumbs2:
