Question about renewals...

First, the good news is that I'm getting ready to FINALLY mail my application to the DPS. I've been trying to track down documentation from some minor misdemeanor alcohol-related arrests from my wilder college days almost 20 years ago, and I think I finally have everything I need. It's involved a LOT of time on the phone, and quite frankly it's been a pain in the neck, since college towns apparently don't keep misdemeanor alcohol records very far back.

My question is this...when I finally do get my CHL, and I go to renew it several years later, will I have to re-do all my research again? Can I just create photocopies of all my documentation, and then include it with my renewal application with a note stating that they are photocopies of the original certified documents provided with my original application? Or do I need to start over from scratch and spend hours on the phone again calling around trying to get courthouses to send me more documents?

From reading the board I know I'm not the only person on here that was foolish in their youth, and I'm curious what y'all have done when you go to renew.

Thanks!

One of the instructors should be along to help here.
It might be good to get say 10 "Certifyed Copies" of every thing you need. Make that many folders & each renewal just stuff the envelope & send it in. That should put you pretty close to 85 when you run out.

You don't have to submit documentation on old misdemeanors again. Thay will already have that from the first time. You only need to submit documentation from any unfortunate incidents that occured during the time since you got your initial license.

Well, I don't plan on having any more unfortunate incidents. ;-)

I will probably keep regular photocopies just in case.

Thanks for the reply!

Crossfire,

Thank you for your well-versed information regarding CHL questions.

I have one also somewhat along the lines of the OP.

Why are fingerprints required for each renewal, as we've already submitted them in the initial paperwork?

Thanks

Good question. But, I have no good answer. As with much of the paperwork we do for the Texas CHL...

I would suppose one reason might be that this provides verification that the person sending in the renewal matches the warm body who submitted the initial application. Photos can be somewhat variable. I, of course, still look like the handsome young devil I was four years ago, but not everyone is so lucky! I don't know for a fact that DPS runs a match against the older prints, but it would be possible.
