So my brother and I are taking my dad out shooting tomorrow so he can practice for his CHL class. We both have ours already but can't remember the course of fire. Can someone refresh my memory. I am needing distances and rounds fired at each distance. I don't know why Dad feels like he needs to practice, he is a great shot. And he taught me. I think he did a good job teaching me how to shoot!

One minor point; the target shown on http://www.texasbestchl.com/range_qual.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is the old PX-PT target that is no longer used. DPS is using the NRA B-27.

i think we are going to use a sheet of copier paper, if you can keep them all in there you will pretty much pass, yes? we don't have ANY type of silhouettes available by the morning....

Two sheets one above the other is real close to the 5 point size of the target.
One sideways, then the other below it and touching up against the first., It is sideways like the first. It gives a vertical rectangle 11" x 16.5".

oh, i did that once at carter's country in spring. after the middle got to be a jagged hole i decided to try to take all the white out of the middle. it was fun. the chicken wire behind it was obliterated. .45 makes a big hole so that helped.

Its shot with a fairly wide angle camera. The target will look a lot closer than the video seems to indicate 3 yards when your shoot seems like reach out and touch me distance.

If your dad shoots much at all he should have no problem.

For my wife, I just drew a humanoid silhouette, approximately the size of a B-27 (i.e. life-size) on a large piece of cardboard. Sometimes switching from a bullseye-type target to a large area target where the bullets have to end up in the middle is a bit challenging for someone who has always used bullseyes. My experience is they sometimes "get lost" on the target without something specific to aim at, especially at distance, and put holes all over it. She did enough 3 yard work to be comfortable, then we mostly practiced from 15 yards.

One bit of gamesmanship (remember, the CHL test is not about shooting bad guys, it is about getting a passing score without scaring the instructor) -- if you shoot a nice close group at the three yard and five yard lines, that big hole in the paper will give you a good aiming point at the 15 yard line.

As I said, if he'd done any shooting at all, the CHL test should be no problem.

i was thinking, he may need the practice because he is used to shooting a ruger blackhawk. he will be using an xd9 for the test so he can carry a wheelgun or semi. i doubt he will carry the ruger though! maybe he will get a new xd for Christmas! we will see in an hour!
