I know the laws, so this is about the practicality side of the issue. We're traveling in west Texas later this week and it will be the pistols first road trip.

Do you guys usually pull it out of your holster and drop it in the center console or glove box or does it stay in a holster?

If hoster, is it a different holster for the glove box?

Neither of our cars have center consoles with tops, so it will be the glove box for us.

Any other tips or advice?

Mine doesn't come out of the holster or off my body. Drove to New Mexico last week and it rode just fine in it's little crossbreed home there and back. I'd say leave it be.

For me personally, it all depends on where I'm driving. If I'm going to be driving around town, I want quick access to my weapon. Since I carry at the 3:00 position, the seatbelt buckle, strap and shirt interfere with accesss to the weapon while sitting in the driver's seat. I have modified a Fobus Roto-Paddle holster to fit between my driver's seat and center console. With me sitting in the driver's seat, it is concealed to everyone but me. An exception to that is...if I'm going to be making frequent stops where I'll be getting in and out of the vehicle, I'll keep my pistol holstered on my hip, but that's just me. I'm sure that each individual on this forum has developed their own tricks that work best for them and the vehicle that they drive.

I fitted a holster into the glove box of my wife's car (the family car) and when we are traveling I put a pistol in that holster with a couple of spare mags and just leave it there. The holster is a leather holster that has the clip removed and it's velcroed onto the glove box lid, so when you open the glove box it presents the grip of the gun for an easy right-hand draw. The gun on my person remains on my person while I am driving so one way or the other, I have access to one in the glove box (or my wife can get to it) or the one I am carrying with me. Ideally, if I were a rich man, I'd have a pistol dedicated to the car glove box carry in both of my cars, but I am about two pistol purchases away from making that happen.

I am not sure how good of an idea it is to just have a gun rattling around in the center console. It makes its position unknown so drawing it in a hurry is going to be tough and you have a higher chance of accidentally grabbing the trigger while trying to get to it. So I try and avoid that. If you think you are going to "carry" in the center console on a regular basis, I suggest getting a cheap nylon holster or some other kind of holster that you can vel-cro or otherwise fix into the console to keep the gun from getting fired accidentally and keep it where you expect it to be in case you need to draw.

To the OP: Do you have your CHL? If you do and you have some sort of holster that does not get interference from your seatbelt, I suggest that you use it. Otherwise the only safe options are the glove box (not handy at all), safe box under seat or you mount a holster out of sight and ensure that it won't allow the weapon to pop-out when braking or crashing.

thats what i did .

a cheap nylon holster from Academy with a thumb break is firmly attached under my truck seat .
its just out of view , but can easily be reached and drawn .

Not at all. The law states you can have a weapon in your car (and to/from your home) as long as it is concealed. If it's on your waist in a holster with your shirt covering it, it's concealed.

Just don't forget to stash it in a console/glove box/under the seat/whatever when you get out of the vehicle, unless it's to walk in your front door at home.

Sounds like it to me.

Not if you politely inform him that you're armed per the MPA, and with your hands remaining on the steering wheel, ask for permission to remove your weapon in whatever manner makes him most comfortable before stepping out of the vehicle.

You have the RIGHT by LAW to protect yourself in your vehicle.

Probably not. Plain vanilla UCW is typically a misdemeanor in Texas except for TABC licensed premises.

i guess i've watched too many episodes of Cops .
then again those guys are usually involved in a crime , and in other states .

Those guys are typically convicted felons. These guys will get to talk with the feds.
