I already have a S&W .40, but I am looking at a XD Sub-Compact to carry around. So since I already have a .40 should I get the XD of the same size so I can use the same bullets? Or should I get the 9mm so I can have a choice of ammo to buy if one of the two sizes may be out of stock?

I'd say get the .40 That way you can use your ammo in either. Then, I think you can buy a 9mm barrel and a couple of mags and use either 9mm or .40 in the XDSC.

I'm pretty sure that I've read that you can use the 9mm barrel in the .40 but not the other way around. (but I could be wrong)

I just got an XDM in 9mm. I love it.

I have owned .45s for a long time, but a couple of years ago, I bought a USP Compact in .40 cal. Later, I purchased a 3" Kimber in .45. My three regular carry pistols are that 3" Kimber, the USPc, and a Springfield 5" 1911 in .45. Given 3 different carry guns in two different calibers, in retrospect I would have preferred to buy my USPc in .45 too. I like to simplify whenever possible.

It's not that the .40 cal is a bad round, it's just that I also own two other carry pistols in a different caliber, and stocking both practice and carry ammo in two different calibers is a pain in my posterior. Add to that the fact that I also have a little pocket revolver in .38 Special that I carry when other methods aren't practical; and that my wife has two carry pistols, in 9mm and .38 Special; it's just a pain to keep enough of each caliber in stock. (...and then there are the other pistols in .22LR, .380, and .44 magnum, and rifles in 5.56/.223 and .308 Win...)

I guess the point is, unless it really turns you on to have more than one caliber available to you (and that's OK too), then simpler might be better, and getting another .40 cal might be the better answer.

I'd say go for the 9mm. 9mm is much less expensive, and you can do a lot more plinking on a lot less money.

Besides, variety is the spice of life, as they say.

Hey now, an XD Subcompact is on my list as a gun I'd like to own, I'm like TAM there. got a 3" Kimber, and a 5" Colt. I would like a small subcompact for even deeper carry requirements ;)
Although a USP sounds nice as well... Maybe I'll have to buy one of those too... Then maybe a LCP or something for even even deeper

I should just buy one of everything, right?

... btw, don't tell the wife, but I just bought some more AR Parts last night...

Is your S&W an M&P model? Why not get your sub-compact also in a S&W M&P model in .40 cal ... I assume you'd then be able to share mags and possibly even holsters, like many do with Glock 22 & 27 or 19 & 26, etc.

If above does not work with your current S&W .40, then I'd go with the 9mm just to give you a different caliber to shoot. Stocking different calibers is really no problem - I stock three different handgun calibers (may be adding a fourth soon), two rifle calibers, and two shotgun gauges (12 & .410). And actually having multiple calibers can be a benefit. I remember a few months back I couldn't find .40 anywhere, but 9mm was prevalent for some reason for a short time. Then it switched, .40 was everywhere, but you couldn't find 9mm anymore. It seems to work in cycles like that these days.

My .40 is a Sigma model. I already have 4 mags for that gun. But for the reason you stated about what caliber is avavailable, I have a choice of two calibers instead of one. But I do like the idea of just one size to buy. I hate this. Does anyone have any info about changing barrels from a .40 to a 9mm with this gun like the first responce said? Thanks.

I thought the 1911 .45 still held that record at somewhere around 60 years?

You are pretty close. The .45acp round was introduced with the 1911 in.....1911. Taken out of service in 1985.(I'm still mad about that). I'm not sure if any other countries are using it as a standard military service round today or not.

The 9 parabellum or 9mm was introduced in 1902, was designed by George Luger, and is still in military service today by the U.S., NATO and many other military forces worldwide.

From what I understand if you get the XD in .40 all you need is a new barrel and new mags. Or you can get the .357 sig and use all three calibers.

I vote for cosmo 9's idea.
