Any of you fine ladies and gentlemen know of a good full length recoil rod for a SA Mil-Spec 1911?

hit up the brownells website http://brownells.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and search for "1911 guide rod" and be sure to get a one piece unit. I don't understand why you would want to change from the mil-spec standard guide rod though.

The first thing I do with any 1911 with a FLGR is replace it with a standard GI style. If John M. Browning didn't think a FLGR was needed then it must be unnecessary. The FLGR prevents racking the slide by pressing the spring plug against your heel, belt buckle, edge of a table, etc. You can't do a true press check to see if you are loaded with a FLGR in place. Avoid 2 piece guide rods at all cost they are noting but a malfunction looking for a time to happen.

My Colt Combat Elite came with a full length from the factory. So far, no issues, but I do agree that you can't press-check one, and the gap between the GR, and the open cap sort of looks gawdy IMO.

Is there truly no downside to going to the shorter GR? I'd think a full length would prevent the spring from bunching or going sideways or something. is this just not an issue?

Anyone else replace their stock FLGR wth a GI one in a colt series 80 recently?

I agree and I do exactly the same thing.........
There is no proven difference in accuracy or function between a standard length GR and the FLGR.

The only thing I know that a FLGR is worth is the "Cool Factor" and that has warmed over time, especially once peeps realized how hard it is to take down and re-assemble a pistol with a "Cool" FLGR.

So did my Colt Lightweight Commander XSE and my Wilson Combat Protector................

Both have been replaced with standard length GI style guide rods and plugs.

It came with the Colt, is stainless, and has probably 500 rounds on it.
