I am not very fond of the safety on the Mil-Spec 1911. How difficult and how much would it cost to replace it with an ambi one? Thanks for the help again!

Not that much. I paid about $20-$30 (IIRC) for the part for my Kimber, and I paid a gunsmith a small amount to install it. If you're comfortable working on your own 1911s, you spend even less.

One of the beauties of the 1911 is the huge selection of aftermarket parts, gunsmiths and gunsmithing info for the DIY type. (Now, I don't recommend messing with the internals of firearms if you have no idea what you're doing....)

With some mechanical skills and some research you too can change the safety on your 1911. Check out http://www.brownells.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for both parts and gunsmithing info.

Are you going to use it as your carry gun? If so I would shy away from a ambi safety. Depending on the position ambi's will disengage on the seat or armrest of most cars. If you look at the high end 1911 carry guns very few use ambi. IMHO.

I recently bought the Taurus 1911 SS with the ambi and since I'm left handed, I love it. I wonder if you could just have the safety for left handed folks on that one side?

I've never had my ambi safety ever get disengaged so I don't worry about it though I'm not saying it can't happen. Many (most?) of the "plastic" guns don't have external safeties and no one seems to worry about those.
