I've just switched to carrying a blued gun; I'm wondering if anyone else carries a blued gun in this Texas heat and what you use to protect the finish from rust.

Mobil 1 5W-20. It is the answer for everything. Tastes funny on eggs, though.

I really like tha' Breakfree clp .... but, it is too thick for only, wiping down / carrying in your holster ... SO,
I use good ole' WD-40. A light wipe down works for me .... But watch your intervals ... SEE: post ref. " Texas sweat & humidity !" in the "Off topic"

FYI... I went for a ride down to Cabela's ( Buda ) yesterday and walked the long guns, consignment//used gun racks.
I bet I counted ten or so, guns that have rust, forming on their barrels.
Some of them are pricey... you'd think.. a Cabela's employee would at least wipe them down with something ??!!! What a shame. (( Some, they have there,
reminders me of my youth and tha' good ole' days. ((Love those old .22s and 30-30s.))

Why though, I use a couple different products, but 3 and 1 mostly. Oil is oil. Mobile 1 is designed to work at high temperatures not gum up, is cheaper than fancy gun oil. Most guns use so little and some work pretty well without oil. Seems to me just about any old mosstly light oil would be as good as good as the fanciest of oils

Silicone Cloth or Gunzilla wipedown flat surfaces, Mobil 1 for lubrication.

Mobile 1 pretty good on eggs with a little Mcilhenney Co. Avery Island La. Tabasco sauce.

I'm a big fan of Breakfree...Certainly it doesn't have to drip with the stuff all over it, but during a normal cleaning, a good wipedown with a rag that you've been using during the cleaning with it on there should do the trick...

Just try to keep any oils out of your Titrium sights...Even with the residue off your rags...

Eezox, Corrosion-X, Breakfree CLP in that order

FWIW, I have not yet used any Eezox or Corrosion-X. I use Breakfree CLP on the blued slide of my LCP and as sort of a coating on all of my other guns' metal parts. I use Mobil1 5W20 or 0W20 for lubricant purposes and clean the gun with other products like Hoppes #9.

I would not suggest using silicone mostly because it is nearly impossible to remove if ever you need to refinish the gun, and I fear that a finish like Dura-Coat may not adhere if there is silicone residue.

Side note, when I first got my LCP, I carried it for about a week before I had a chance to shoot it or clean it and the slide rusted promptly that week. I was convinced I was going to have to Dura-Coat the slide. The PO had used silicone cloths to keep rust at bay, but it was rusting anyway, consistently, on the serrations, and the barrel would get rusty within hours of a cleaning. As a stop-gap, I began to coat the whole thing lightly with CLP and have not seen a speck of rust ever since. It's been about three months (all summer) that I have been carrying this gun almost daily, usually with no holster and the slide directly against my skin, and there is absolutely no rust on the slide or barrel. As you might know, the barrel on a LCP is just bare steel, no bluing or other rust-preventative. I think CLP is probably "good enough" and maybe Eezox is better.

i have noticed moisture on my LCP on really hot days . no rust yet , but i will keep it oiled well .

someone told me that i should leave it out of the pocket holster during the night
to give the holster and the gun time to dry out .
and just to regularly maintain it .

as a side note , i had a "garage gun " once .
with the humidity in Houston , that thing rusted up quick .
even with weekly oil applications it would get a haze of rust on it .

If you follow the links in my other post, you may see some evidence that "oil" is not sufficient for rust prevention, and there is a very big difference in the rust prevention properties of "oil" vs. CLP, Eezox, etc.

yes , i agree that oil may not be sufficient for a gun that is carried in the pocket daily .
especially in the summer .

i have only learned about CLP just recently . sounds like good stuff .
i will pick some up as soon as possible .

Years ago I used Hoppe's products exclusively....cleaner, oil, etc. and it worked perfectly for me. We were living out in the country in Clay County up on the Red River, by Wichita Falls.

This past April, the gun store guy recommended Breakfree CLP. I had never heard of it. It works very good. It's a little thinner oil than Hoppe's(if I remember correctly). After cleaning, the last step I do is to wet a patch with 1 or 2 drops, and wipe down every piece of metal I can get to, inside and out. It doesn't take a thick coat of oil to protect metal. The thinnest coat works fine for me, and I've never had any problems.

For preventing rust, I've never found anything better than Rusteprufe.

It comes in about a 4 oz glass jar containing only an absorbent pad in the bottom and a chamois.

Very infrequently, you can remoisten the pad from a bottle of liquid Rusteprufe sold separately.

The product's been around since 1938. I've been using it over 40 years.

A wipe down has protected stored guns for many years.

The only rust-preventer I have used with any success is BoeShield from Birchwood casey. For guns that are prone to rust, I spray them down with BoeShiled periodically.
For a carry pistol, car wax might be the best choice, at least for smooth external surfaces.
WD40 is probably the worst choice. It seems to accelerate rust formation on machine tools.
