Hello everyone.

After lurking in the shadows since this site was created I finally registered.

A little about me....I'm 54 years old, have a wife of 33 years and a (soon to be) 16 year old son. We live in the D/FW area and have been in the same house for 30 years this month...mortgage is almost paid for! How's that for stability?

I am a long time gun owner and occasional IDPA and trap shooter. I vote Republican and consider myself a conservative.

I am not however, a CHL holder.

Last week we had a situation at work that made me rethink my CHL status. One of my co-workers was shot by an irate employee no more than 50 feet from me. I could have been the next victim if circumstances had gone differently.

To make a long story short, I'm not gonna put off getting the CHL any longer. I don't know whether it would have done any good that day or not, but I have resolved that I will never unable to defend myself in that type of situation again.

This is the type of crime that you read about in the newspaper that always happens to someone else, right? After all, I live in a quiet neighborhood in a suburban city with a very low crime rate. I work at a job where these type of things just don't happen. Never could it happen to me!

I never applied for a CHL because of the cost. I have a member of my family with a (very expensive) chronic illness and another that's about ready to start driving. I just never could justify spending the $250.00 or so for a CHL permit. There was always something more important to spend the money on.

No more excuses, we're going to find the money for the permit no matter what. I seem to have developed a new sense of priorities in the past week.

Welcome aboard! Glad the gods favored you that day! I am a new member myself who has also found a renewed reason to get my CHL and finally have the resources to accomplish it with.

Welcome! Terrible about the work shooting. Glad it wasn't worse.

Where have you been anyway? I haven't seen you at a match in many months.

We were at the last Saturday match. Where were you?

Just kidding. I had to take a short break from IDPA due to my work schedule among other things. Getting home late on Thursday nights and getting up at 3:45am to go to work was not working out.

Right now I plan to make as many Saturday matches as my work schedule allows and the occasional Sunday IDSA match as well. I'm working on training a replacement lead man for my shift at work right now. If that works out, maybe I can get back to more normal hours and start shooting the Thursday evening matches again.

Ah, the Saturday match. I don't go to those because they conflict with my Wifes Cowboy Action Shooting. I shoot 3-4 matches a month and she shoots 1. I think that's fair don't you?

Sooner or later I'll make one of the JCCSA shoots. I always hear positive comments about them.

Don't let money stop you from getting your CHL.

Not sure what part of DFW you are in, but I'm in DFW too and am a CHL instructor. I don't want anyone getting hurt because of the cost of the CHL course. Given your situation, I'll let you take my next class at my cost (range fee, and DPS document fee) which will help you considerably in affording the license (less than $20) which includes finger prints and photos.

Drop me a private email and we can set up the class.

That is my kind of CHL instructor and fellow American. Sees a need and jumps to the rescue! I applaud you sir! (Boy I wished I had this much energy)

I am praying that yu soon will. Just promise you will use it more maturely in the KOG.
