I got the impression that they were intent on assimilating any being, period. Humanoids just always seemed to be handy.

Hollywood is lazy.

It's much easier to get human(oid) actors to play the scenes than non-humanoids.

It's so hard to find bacteria with right "look" for the cameras and the ability to act. :-)

They would show up on your ship and say "We are The Borg. Prepare to be assimilated. Resistance is futile".

For the most part, resistance was indeed futile. That is, until a clever synthetic human pretended to be assimilated when the surprisingly seductive queen of the Borg enticed him by giving him some real human tissue, which she figured he'd like. Turns out, he was tricking her, and the bad guys lost. That was a good movie.

But back on topic. Resistance is never futile if in fact the odds are that by not resisting you are going to die. Resistance gives you your only shot at survival.

Fighting back ALWAYS improves your odds of surviving in a fight for your life.

I hope and pray that they are relocated to a place of safety.
