I am heading to Coulmbus, GA., nest Tuesday, to see my son graduate from Airborne School at Ft. Benning. Since Alabama is the only state that will not honor my CHL, Will I be safe by taking it off and locking it up in the rear of the Tahoe, and hope I dont get stopped & searched, until I get across the Georgia state line???
I also know that I will need to leave my firearm locked in the safe at the hotel while in the military base.

Any suggestions!!!!

Hotel safe is good whil on base. I have done that w/ my son in military also. I will let txi or one of the other authorities on R. answer the rest.

And I will follow with interest. A co-worker of mine (yes, I actually work) asked the same question of me today concerning transport of his weapon through the state of Alabama. He will be going to Georgia this weekend.

From Packing.org

A person may lawfully transport a firearm , including a handgun, from one state in which they are legal to possess to another state without a permit as required under Alabama law, provided the following conditions are met:

The firearm is unloaded
Neither the firearm or the ammunition is readily accessible
In case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's compartment, the firearm and ammunition shall be in a locked container other than the glove box or console.

Federal Law on the Transportation of Firearms. Title 18 U.S.C. Section 926A

I would call the Alabama authorities for this trip....after that I would just get a NH license. It is the best deal out there! Take care.

You shouldn't assume that. Every military base sets their own rules.

When I went to Knox to see my oldest graduate from OSUT, I checked with the provost marshal's office and found that concealed carry license holders may bring their firearms on base, but may not carry them into buildings. "Just lock it in the trunk before going into any buildings" was the official word.

Your son will get to experience time travel. The drop zone is in Alabama, so he'll hit the ground an hour before he jumps from the plane.

Don't worry....the gun will NOT be carried on the Army Base. I was just concerned about the travel through Bama' legally.

Thanks to all for your info!!!

I recently went to GA. I e-mailed the Alabama State Police and Alabama's AG for the legality of transporting handguns in that state and kept both replies with my insurance. According to both replies the gun must be in a locked container and not accessible to the driver (in trunk). If the vehicle doesn't have a trunk (SUV) then the gun must be in a locked container and any ammunition stored seperately.

When I get home I'll see if I still have the actual responses and post those.
