Sure a 9 shot revolver seems really cool 'till you gotta' scrub all 9 chambers in the cylinder plus the barrel. I've got an HEB bag filled with soiled bore patches. .22 LR=fun to shoot, awkward to clean. I love the smell of gun solvent in the morning.

The conventional wisdom when it comes to .22LR is: don't clean it at all. Wipe down the exterior, run a quick patch through the bore and/or cylinders if you feel you must, but otherwise leave it alone.

I do clean my .22's, but when the patches turn gray, that's good enough.

Then run an oiled patch through it and wipe down the exterior.

I've certainly never heard that. Where did you hear that? I always clean my firearms and my .22s tend to be even more finicky than other firearms. If I don't clean the neo (in fact regularly wiping down the chamber after about 100 rounds in a session) then it starts to misfire repeatedly.

I'm hardly a gun expert, but with my little arsenal of 2 pocket autos and 1 pocket revolver, commercially manufactured gun solvent isn't cost restrictive like ammo; so I'm going to go with what is created and recommended by the experts. Now a rust frozen antique is different, and might necessitate creativity.

And also from what I've read, and experienced, revolvers, specifically with cheap ammo, (like I use) get much filthier than autos, so I can't imagine a world where one doesn't clean one's revolver.

I believe that revolvers need cleaning after every time out. When I was shooting my revolver in IDPA I would keep a brush with me so I could brush it out after every 20-30 rounds. This makes for better reloads - the empties come out better and the new rounds go in a LOT better. I figure that if a few rounds can make a difference as to how well my revolver unloads and reloads it stands to reason that it is dirty and should be cleaned.
