Got this in email. Not sure if the story is 100% accurate, but the photos are pretty impressive.

This reloader supposedly had used 18 grs of Bullseye ( fast burning, high pressure powder ) instead of 18 grs of 2400 ( a slow burning, lower pressure powder). Talk about a candidate for the DARWIN AWARDS. Needless to say this will void the factory warranty on the pistol! Maybe just a little too hot of a load. (Ya think?? ) He needs to go back to the reloading manual and study a little harder.

Gads! I have never seen anything like that in my life. He made a hard top into a convertible.

It looks like all the energy was directed upward. He's one lucky dumb person, and lucky to be alive.

That's why I do not reload and do not shoot any reloads.
I got a squib from a batch of reloads once and stopped using them since then. I figured if I could get a squib, I could just as easily get a K-BOOM and it is not worth it to me.

Don't know. This was sent to me with the story attached. Not sure when/where this happened or who was involved. this is an older model gun (looks like a model 65 maybe) so who know how old these photos are.

No matter how long ago it happened I'm sure the shooter remembers it like it was yesterday.

There was a similar thread on TheHighRoad.org. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=478818" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This was a write-up in Shooting Times about a fellow who did the same thing with a Blackhawk - 18gr Bullseye under a 200gr slug in his .44 Mag.

In the case of the blown .44 Mag Blackhawk, I quote from the post (#22) above, "Assuming a COL of 1.600" with the Hornady 200gr HP/XTP bullet, QuickLOAD estimates the pressure for the 18.0gr Titegroup load at 106,640 psi (and the available case capacity still wasn't completely filled...)." This fool had a detonation of over 100K psi in his fist. He is lucky to have a fist.

This is why you gotta check, double check, and then check one more time before loading. Also, only keep one bottle of powder on the bench and CONFIRM it with your data before dumping in the powder measure.

Now, the question is will he try to pull that bullet that's half out of the cylinder and try to resuse it?

Judging from the "44 Magnum" stamping on the barrel, I would daresay that this is a S&W Model 629.

S&W began installing the internal lock (hole above thumblatch) in 2003. This revolver had to be manufactured after that date.
