I am looking to get one for my wife for Christmas, and would like to any info on it. I have read many reviews, but would like to hear from ones who carry it and .

I'm no expert for sure, but a PT111 Millenium Pro is my carry gun and I love it! It was also the gun I used to qualify for my CHL. However, the first thing I had to change was the sights. It came with those "straight 8" or some call them snowman sights which are kind of a pain. I put on some of the Williams Fire Sights relatively cheaply. Also, there is a thread on the forum somewhere about this particular model of Taurus discharging when dropped even with the safety on. But other than those two things, I haven't had a bit of problem with mine....no malfunctions of any kind. Very reliable and pretty fun to shoot, usually a favorite of my friends who don't shoot very often.

I"m no expert, but Taurus is an ok learning gun and perhaps not the best idea for CCW. When they work, they work ok, but they've got a relatively moderate problem rate. From what I've heard, the Taurus revolvers are ok but not the semi-autos. I've got a PT1911 and have had bug after bug with it. I bought the pistol in order to have a learning weapon to fiddle with (replace parts, detail strip, etc.), but it's not been a pleasant experience. Taurus customer support is horrible and turn-around time are just plain stupid on even simple fixes so I've replaced about 75% of the parts in it to make it work dependably. I now wish I'd gotten a regular mil-spec 1911 from colt or Springfield. The extra few dollars would've saved me a few grey hairs!

We got my wife an XD-9. Weather she ever uses if for CC or not doesn't matter but I do know that other than the sights being off a smidgen, the thing has not had an issue. If you're looking for a CCW for the missus perhaps you should look at something with a better track record such as a Sig, Karh, walther, or good 'ole glock. If it's someone's first CCW I usually also suggest making it a 40 caliber. Bigger and badder round than the 9 mm but not as bad a kick as a 45 when shooting.

I will say this: the taurus 1911 has the heinie '8' sights (dot over dot) and I've grown to like it. My other 1911 has the regular 3-dot night sites and I've found the dot-over-dot arrangement faster to bring up and align.

I think if the Taurus semi-autos were $100 lower in price across the board, then they would be more like it. But as it is, you can get a S&W Sigma (far better gun) for less than a 24/7 and you can get a Kel-Tec P11 (at least as good) for $100 less than a PT111.

I don't know what an M111 is, but if it's like a PT111, I'd say get a Kel-Tec P11 instead. Or if you want to move up-market, get a G26, M&P 9c, etc. There are a lot of better subcompact double-stack 9mm semi-autos out there, IMHO. A used G26 is about $400-450, just $50-100 more than a PT111 and well worth the extra money.

Interesting. My son has a PT1911, and with one exception, it has run flawlessly and proven to be very accurate. The lone exception was that after several hundred rounds (maybe 800 or so?), the slide stop pin broke right in half. As it happens, I had still had a "defective" slide stop from my Kimber in the Kimber's case, with us at the range. My Kimber was delivered with that defective part, which the factory replaced at no charge a few days after I bought the gun, and I had saved the defective part on a whim. We popped that defective Kimber part right into the Taurus, and my son went right back to shooting it. Now, over a year later, that Kimber part is still in that Taurus pistol, and the Taurus PT1911 is still soldiering on, and still shooting quite accurately.

After reading the posts, I think we will go look at some Springfields. The thing that really got me was the discharging when dropped along with other problems. Since customer support is important to me, then I do not want to have to deal with rude people or long delays if I have to send it in or something.

Yeah, the discharging when dropped thing bothers me as well and although I love the Taurus, because of that, I will be transitioning it to a house/nightstand (thanks for that tip joe) gun and getting something else to carry. One of the guys I know from work is getting a Kahr PM9 for a back-up gun, but they're hard to find and a tad pricey.
