A 52-year-old Dallas ISD employee is hospitalized in critical condition after he accidentally shot himself while on campus, district officials say.
The man, who works in the district's heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) unit, was at Umphree Lee Elementary School in the Redbird area of southern Dallas on Monday morning.
Monday is his day off. But we're told the man, whose name has not yet been released, was at the school as a volunteer and to visit two of his grandchildren who attend the school.
School officials say at about 8 o'clock Monday morning the man was talking to a friend in the school's custodial office. He apparently leaned out of the office door and pressed up against the door frame. When he did, officials say, a pistol in his pants discharged.
The bullet is thought to have struck the man in the leg. Paramedics took him to the hospital.
The school day had just begun and there were students in the building. It's not known if any students were in the immediate vicinity of the shooting.
Laquecia Smith was enrolling her two daughters at the school when the shooting happened. She says she heard a loud pop and knew it was a gunshot. She says people inside the school panicked, and staff members tried to get the students away from the scene and help the injured man.
The man could face criminal charges for bringing the gun onto campus, which is a third-degree felony. District officials say they don't know why the man would have brought a gun to the school.
No one else was hurt in the shooting.
