It took me a bit of effort. If you read my previous posts in that thread, I nearly had my Man Card confiscated for shopping at Market Street and Target instead of Wally World, and for eating Sushi instead of Natchos. But hard work and an undaunted desire to get it right won out in the end. Of course, they had no Natchos, so I had to substitute the greasy fries from MacDo. Darn it!

While I was waiting for my CHL to come, I was also confused. I had never heard of Wal-Mart referred to as "Wally World." I led a sheltered life. I had never even been in a WalMart until I moved to Texas.

My boss at work got his CHL and told me about the ritual. So, a couple years ago, after taking my CHL class I was checking my status on the DPS site daily. Then, one lucky day when I arrived home after work, I checked the mailbox, and low and behold I received an envelope with a return address from the Texas DPS in Austin. I opened it, post haste, and saw the most beautiful piece of plastic that I had ever seen.

After a hard day's work, I was very tired. I thought, "well I can go out on the weekend and do my WallyWalk." But I couldn't resist. I was so excited that I went into my house, put on my holster, put in my .380ACP, put my brand new CHL in my wallet and drove to the local WalMart store.

Like TAM, my WalMart didn't serve nachos, so I ordered a cheeseburger, fries and a Coke at their McDonald's. I even took my time scarfing down the food. I had to make sure there were no BGs following me. When I was sure that nobody was shadowing me I went to the video section to look at DVDs, then the sporting goods section where I bought two boxes of ammo and then I walked to the checkout counter. After paying, I slowly and carefully walking to my car, I drove home. I got home and took off my holster, sat down and had a glass of wine to celebrate.

There are many variations of the WallyWalk. I still think that it is a good tradition for new Texas CHL holders.

I'm pretty sure that I started the photo tradition for the Wally Walks, but I could be wrong about that. It may surprise some to know that I've been wrong before.

Just remember, you're in Walmart and not a horror movie - though you may think your on the set of one. Stay calm.

Those grossly obese-blob bodies with the pasty pale skin and dead eyes aren't zombies, though they do a mean impression. Some slowly trundle upright through the store, others spread themselves all those poor abused handicap cars and sneak up on you. Remain calm.

Prepare yourself if you've never been in Wally World. It doesn't matter which one, they come complete with a vast inventory of the morbidly obese zombie lookalikes on every aisle. They're frightening to look at, but are basically harmless, unless really, really hungry... Stay focused and moved away at a rapid rate, you'll be fine.

That is the first time I have seen that TAM. Great stuff. The look of pride on your face is worth the price of admission !

I don't want to kill anyone's fun, but...

I don't see the point (or the enjoyment) in a wally walk. It's kinda like the LEO encounters - it appears to me as if people *try* to have LEO encounters just to test their CHL foo.

Ever since applying for mine, I've been extra careful not to be engaged by the local constabulary. I actually find myself being more mindful of the traffic laws than I was before. The way I see it is that it takes effort to get your license, and it should require effort to keep it.

I'm not going to go on a wally walk just to prove I can conceal, because it really isn't that hard to do.

and that is entirely the point!

The point isn't to see if you can get caught, the point (IMHO) is to give folks who are new to carrying a relatively 'safe' place to build their confidence that people aren't going to stare at their 'lump' and run away horrified.

Of course you don't have to do one, nobody is going to take away anything frpm ypu if you don't do one or don't take pictures.

I also don't belive having an LEO encounter is high on anyone's 'must do' list, in fact I still haven't had one, nor do I intend to have one. The point, again, is that those who have had them are telling those new to a CHL, or who haven't had an encounter yet what to expect and that they are really not a big deal.
