If you're asked for two forms of ID, is it legal (or wise) to use a CHL as a second ID along with your DL?

Why advertise? I would not. I believe that is nobody's business that I can carry except for me and the State of Texas.
I have a passport, a requirement now if you leave the US and try to get back in, which I show. I highly recommend a passport.

The first question is easy to answer. yes, it is legal to show your CHL as ID.

The second question is much harder and a personal choice. There are many who think it is never wise to let people know you carry. There are others who will point out that just showing a CHL does not mean you are carrying a gun.

I look at it like I do cops. There are people who go out of the way to hide they are cops. Then there are the people who put police license plates on their car and wear their police hat and t-shirt all the time.

I fall somewhere in between. I don't go out of the way advertising I am a cop, but I don't hide it either. Almost everyone in this city (really big town) knows anyway and when i go to other places if someone asks I tell them.

So, I would probably not advertise I was carrying but I wouldn't be as secretive about it as some either. If i had other ID, I would probably use it, but if all I had was my DL and CHL, I would not worry about it.

Other than CHL holders, how many people carry around two forms of picture ID? My wife doesn't. Neither of us carry our passports on us either. I also can't recall the last time I needed two forms of ID. However, if it came up, and I don't think I'd have any other choice but to show my CHL.

Try opening an account, buy a CD, money market certificate or anything else at a bank without two forms of ID. Won't happen unless maybe you are a current customer. The funny thing is the second ID can be any major credit card. I did not know that credit cards could be forms of ID but they are excepted at a lot of places as a second ID.

In California, it's against the law to use a credit card as a form of ID.

I frequently need to show 2 photo IDs (Work related stuff. My other job, not my CHL training)

I almost ALWAYS show my CHL as the second ID. But then, I LIKE to get people talking about it.

DL, CHL, Military Retiree ID card, UTSA ID Card, Life VFW Metal Card, Lefe AMVet Card, NRA card - no wonder my wallet is so fat!

It's against every credit card company's merchant agreement to use them as a form of ID.

Legal yes.

My personal choice would be not to use the "C"HL.

Other than the Police , the only person you should show your CHL is the guy at the gun counter when making a purchase.

It helps to speed you through the background check.

I have used my CHL for the requested second form of ID at both my bank and a check cashing store before I got my bank account. Both people just smiled and said thank you and continued with the transaction.
Personally I dont care who knows and i also see it as way to spark up the convesation about it.

I personally have chosen not to use my CHL as a 2nd form of ID. I just don't want to advertise to anyone that I'm a CHL. I'm always concerned about the inevitable 2nd question..."are you currently carrying?" Unless they're a LEO, it's none of their business.

In my line of work, I frequently visit refineries and petro-chemical plants. They have started requesting a form of federal ID from the TSA known at a TWIC card (Transportation Workers Identification Credential). While I'm not even remotely related to the transportation industry, this TWIC card has evolved into other arenas for use as ID. With this ID, I am able to go throughout a refinery un-escorted. Now, I'm not suggesting that anyone just go out and apply for this ID, although you could, but it does cost $132.50 for applying. My current one is good through 2014.

Anyway, I use it as my 2nd form of ID. Funny thing about this ID though...even though it's issued by the TSA, and requires the typical FBI background check, etc., TSA doesn't accept it for use as primary ID at the airport. Whatever!

If for some reason I used my CHL as a second form of identification and a NON-LEO asked me if I was carrying, would it be illegal if I lied to them if I was carrying?
