How do you guys carry in the car? I'm talking about carrying in stop and go traffic.

If I carry inside the waistband (as I normally do on foot), I can not draw quick enough and it is unconformable on longer trips.

My current solution is to carry inside the cupholder and cover it with a towel or hat. However, I recognize my firearm could become a deadly flying object in a car accident and was looking for a better solution.

Any ideas?

I like a shoulder holster. My daily carry is pretty heavy and the shoulder rig balances the weight well. It is also easy to crossdraw and the seatbelt does not get in the way as the gun rides under it. I too find waistband carry uncomfortable in cars unless it is a pretty short trip.

3" SP101 cross draw Uncle Mikes cheap IWB @ 10:00, or Kahr 9 or 40 galco IWB strongside. both cases under jacket that allows easy access. No comfort issues either way but the revolver crossdraw is easier to deploy.

I carry in a holster that is strapped to the front underside of the seat.

In the door pocket with a rag draped loosely over it. If it jumps out in a wreck, that's just how the cookie crumbles.

In my truck I wedge a gun between the seat bottom and the seat back (bench seat) with the grip accessible
and a rag draped over it. All I have to do is reach down beside me , sweep the rag away , and draw the gun.

I carry in a Wilderness Safe Packer. My wife and daughters give me grief about having a man bag but it work very well in the car.

I've got a zipper bag ("gun rug") with suede on the outside. I like those better than the slick nylon ones because the suede will keep it where you put it on cloth upholstery. In my pickup, the middle seat back folds down to make an armrest/console. (2002 Chevy Silverado ext-cab and 2004 Chevy Silverado ext-cab, both are basically the same arrangement.) The gun rug is under the console on the seat and fits snugly between them. It might come loose in a major accident, but it certainly won't slide off the seat just from hitting the brakes in an emergency stop. I leave the gun rug partially unzipped. It's much quicker to stick my hand in there and pull the pistol than it is to get a pistol out of my belt holster, which is under my shirt, which is under the seat belt. It's also invisible from outside the vehicle if I'm careful in how I place it. Same gun rug could be laid on most seats and with a jacket or something on top of it, it's concealed.

On that note, practice drawing your weapon while buckled in your vehicle. (Unloaded and double and triple checked, please.) It's quite awkward if you haven't done it a few times. And when you really need it is not the time to be trying to figure out how to do it. (I'd suggest some place with a little privacy so your neighbors don't think you're a nutcase sitting in your driveway playing with a gun.) Be aware of the muzzle. It's very easy to sweep part of your body while trying to bring a weapon to bear from this position.

I carry my 96D in a pocket of my Jack Pack (copy of Jack Bauer's bag from 24), which is placed between the seats of my van. Quick flip of the flap and the gun is easily accessible.

My Miata is a different story. I usually end up with a shoulder holster or similar since I can't fit anything between the seats for concealment, plus the top stays down at 99% of stops anyway. I need to keep any weapon with me when I drive it; much less secure than the van.
