I can do it in a heartbeat or less and I'm 6'0" and 300+ lbs with a Hawaiian shirt on most of the time and a Crossbreed Supertuck holster. Found out today how quick I can go into "automatic mode" when I need too while sitting/driving. Ended up not being a threat but it started out looking that way...car next to me at the light in Houston area, passenger got out on my side, I drew low cover in a split-second, turned out to be nothing but could've been something different. Always good to be prepared.

I hate seatbelts

I usually tilt my holster forward a bit when I get in my truck so I don't have to lean forward to get it out. Tried it while sitting in my driveway this morning, pretty fast

That's how I carry 100% of the time; in or out of the vehicle.

That's not always an option - what if you're boxed in and can't go anywhere?

My seatbelt goes right over my weapon/IWB holster, making it difficult to reach. I have not yet come up with a reasonable alternative to this situation.

I'm going to a vehicle class next year. We spend so much time in/around cars it's good to have some specific firearms training in that environment.

Have you tried blousing your shirt, jacket or cover garment over the lap portion of the seatbelt? That way, if you had to draw, you could lean or pull yourself forward and have an easier time clearing the garment and getting your hand on the gun (here I am assuming a 3-5 or 9-7 o'clock holster position).

No need to transfer the gun from one holster to another.

No modification to the vehicle.

Nothing to leave in the vehicle to cause suspicion or for a thief to find and steal.

What will be necessary is a readjustment/self-check of the cover garment when you take the seatbelt off---and this might be a dealbreaker for some individuals.

Also, if one is in the driver's seat (doubtful anybody with a right-hand drive vehicle is reading this) and wishes to detach his seatbelt with his gun drawn, he would probably want to hold the gun in his right hand, while slipping his left hand between his body/cover garment and the seatbelt chest strap to unlatch the seatbelt and maneuver it out of the way, so the right hand can keep the gun pointed in an appropriate direction (the threat) without disturbance. For the opposite seatbelt orientation, the gun would ideally be held in the left hand so the right hand could detach the seatbelt.

Man, I need a bigger car. I drive an is300 with heavily side-bolstered seats, and not much cabin space. I'm 6'-2", about 265 lbs with a large build and a bit of a spare tire... I also don't have much leg room to extend and shift my body to the left (the door sort of gets in the way). So anyway, it's a real PITA to access my IWB in the 3:00 position, especially with a coat on. It's much easier to access when I'm driving my wife's minivan.

After many years of fighting tight fitting cars and seatbelts I tried left-hand carry last summer, and now that is the way I carry most of the time. It is a lot easier to draw lefthanded when sitting in a car compared to right-hand carry. If necessary I can fire lefthanded but even if I had to change hands after drawing it would still be much faster than fighting the seat belt trying to get a gun out of the holster.

That actually looks like a good alternative while in the car. But once I am out of the car I would have to pull a Superman and find a phonebooth to switch it back to 3 o'clock, and I am not as blindingly fast as Clark Kent.

I must ponder upon this further.
