The answer is obvious fellas. It's a plastic gun!

Or the wrong ammo to start with. I wonder if someone tried to fire a 10mm round out of a .40 S&W pistol. The site where you found the photos gave no explanation?

Wonder if the shooter still has intact thumbs...

No , they were just guessing like we are . There were no facts as to what actually happened .

That's what it looks like to me. A round not fully chambered because it was to big for it, but the firing pin hit the mark.

I found a little more info using the power of google. I suspect it was the shooter holding it, at least in the second photo due to the blistering on the left hand. The KaBoom happened in a match so I suspect reloads may have been in play. My theory is someone forgot to trim the case length a few too many times this allowed the round to be long enough to prevent the gun from going into battery but close enough to battery that the sear was able to catch the striker and release it.

Thank for the Google-fu, G.A. Heath. From the way the base of that cartridge looks in the photos, its pretty clear sumthin' wasn't normal with it from the start.

I googled Glock Kaboom and saw that YouTube is rife with videos of guns of all kinds going kaboom, including, but not limited to an AR15, a Tommy Gun, a Glock .40, a Berreta 92SF M9, and on an on an on. People can be real idiots.

I would certainly agree with those who suspect an out-of-battery situation here, for whatever basic cause, and there can be several.

This demonstrates one of the reasons why I refuse to stand on the line next to one of those people (usually, but not always, a Newbie) who gets his kicks by firing a semiautomatic handgun downrange as fast as he can pull the trigger, making nothing but noise and an occasional hole in the target, usually well away from the black. Both childish and dangerous. He never gets the chance to see whether or not the firearm has returned to battery before pulling the trigger again, and even this assumes, possibly falsely, that he could tell by looking at his weapon.

Of course there are both competitive and operational circumstances which justify, if not demand, rapid fire, but those to whom these circumstances arise are most likely experienced shooters, less likely to let their weapon or ammo generate firing out of battery.
