I just inheritted an older Sako 7mm MAG deer hunting rifle via my Great Grandmother's will ( Long story short, When my Great Grandpa passed he left it to my Great Grandmother who willed it to me. ) The rifle has a camo cover on everything except the barrel. So, I'm hoping everything underneath is in good shape because I haven't had much time to look at the rifle. I did take it out and shoot a box of shells through it yesterday evening and it is mechanically sound. However, the barrel is littered with small rust spots due to the fact that my Great Grandmother had no interest in firearms and it was neglected for the past 5 years since my Great Grandpa passed. This is a very solid rifle with a lot of sentimental value to me so I am wanting to make it my deer hunting rifle.

Question is, How do a go about removing the rust on the barrel and other parts that may have some under the cover?

Also, if there is any Gunsmith's on the forum close to the DFW area I would like to know where your'e located so I can bring the gun to you for some possible trigger work.

WD40 and 0000 steel wool works every time, will not harm the blue if you don't get carried away.
Other light oils can be substituted, use what you have.

Brake fluid and piece of old blue jeans works wonders on the red grainy looking rust. Swab the area with brake fluid and let it sit for a while then using a piece of old denim with brake fluid on it wipe the rust away. The denim is just "scrubby" enough and the brake fluid will get under the rust and loosen it without harming the bluing. If it is little "hills" of rust you may have some pitting. Sakos usually have a great trigger out of the box what is your complaint about this one?

Unless something is wrong with the trigger, leave it alone.

Well, I have a Remington .270 that I put a lighter trigger on and I like it a lot. This trigger seems heavier to me. It tended to make me pull a little because I'm used to the trigger breaking faster and easier. So, I was just going to put the same trigger on this one so they would be the same.

Sorry, I don't mean to tell you what to do with your own rifle. I don't know what particular model you have or whether your trigger has any adjustments, but in my experience Sakos have some of the smoothest and finest actions and triggers of any off-the-shelf rifle. I wish I owned one. Enjoy it.

Oh, no offense taken at all Wild Bill. It's a very smooth trigger. Just a little on the heavy side for my tastes that's all.

Thanks a ton for the information. I would much rather do this then replace the trigger on it.

I just rub Hoppes on the rust, let soak a minute, then lightly rub off with a clean soft cloth. Unless the rust is deep it will loosen and be wiped off by this process. Anything even mildly abrasive risks damaging the bluing and I've seen several nice guns so damaged (including an otherwise nearly mint Win Model 12) .
