I had downloaded the GunVault program to keep track of my firearms. After a number of issues with the program (firearm entries and pics disappearing, entries duplicated, etc) I decided to make my own DB. I used MS Excel to create a DB. Used the same lists (Manufacturers, caliber, configuration, etc) as in GunVault and can be tailored to your needs/wants.

Feel free to modify (not password protected) and use as you see fit. Let me know if I can help with any questions on how to use/modify to suit you. Hope some of you can find it useful.

I know a lot of people do not use it but I made mine in Microsoft Access its a database program and it worked great for it I will try and post a screen shot.

So, for those that use something like this, do you bother to use passwords or anything on the files?

Well, I was considering doing just that for my own assets after hearing about the Mesquite PD having an online app for people to log their assets and serial numbers. I don't feel a government agency (even a city goverment) should have access to private citizens asset information. But the concept of storing the serial numbers, pictures, descriptions, etc. on a secure (using SSL) database and it being offsite and backed up regularly is ideal.

Keeping backup CD/DVD's off-site, like in a safe deposit box, is the best way to protect it from a fire or theft in our homes. Using lock boxes, fire safes, on-site is next.

I'm sure there is something commercially available - but it would be a fun project to hone my skills and provide a service to people like me who never get around to it, but think it is important.

Google docs, if you trust them with it. They already know everything else about you.

I want to build mine in Access well. Would you mind sharing your template? I'm not quite savvy enough to build one from scratch but can work my way around one that has the foundation laid.
