Just got through reading a topic about carrying multiple guns and extra mags to "stay in the fight" and "defend against multiple attackers". Didn't want to highjack that thread so started this one.

I want to be prepared but I also want to be realistic. I have heard of instances of a chl shooting an intruder or exchanging gun fire. I would like to hear from people on this forum who have actually had to fire their weapon in an encounter. How many times did you have to shoot? How many times did you have to reload? How many weapons did you use? Any equipment failures?

Do I really need to carry 2 guns, extra mags, and a knife? Your experiences will answer my question. Please actual experiences only - no what ifs or could happens.

I have no CHL involved shootings, but were involved in two as a LEO.

While I was not the shooter, both times the BG was stopped with one shot; one from a .357 and one from a 12 gauge with with 00 buck.

While I know that one-shot stops are not always the norm, I feel that there can be overkill (no pun intended) on carrying too much ammo. I personally carry one gun and whatever ammo the gun holds (Kahr PM9 or 1911), or no more than 10 rounds for the .40 SA. Might I sometime need more? Maybe, but I really feel that we are NOT going to end up in a blazing gun battle. My rounds are to try to get be away from the threat.

There is a plus side though; carrying an extra mag or gun can be beneficial if you have a mag or gun failure during a shooting and just need to drop it and put another in or grab the other gun. However, I feel very confident in my weapons ability to fire when needed, so choose not to carry a spare.

Bottom line is you should carry what you feel comfortable with.

I think you might find that folks have been advised by their lawyer(s) to not discuss things of this nature...especially on a public forum...just saying.

I hope I never find out.

If I ever do, I probably won't talk about it much.

to the OP, it doesn't really matter what some other person's real life (or supposedly real life) circumstances may or may not have been. You need to make these decisions for yourself based on your and your equipment's capabilities and your level of comfort with each. Personally, if I'm on my own property, just knowing where my gun(s) are an how quickly I can get to them is often enough. Some people feel they must walk around with a firearm on their person 24/7. If/when I do carry a gun on my own property, it's usually just a small pocket pistol (5 or 6 rounds available) with no spare rounds. Again, I know where my other firearms are stashed and how quickly I can get to them if necessary.

When in public, I try to never carry less than 10 rounds of ammo nor less than at least one full backup of ammo plus a loaded firearm. This can be 5 rounds in the cylinder plus 5 rounds in a speedstrip or speedloader for a small-frame revolver all the way up to 13 rounds in my Glock 23 plus two 13-round backup mags for a total of 39 rounds of .40 S&W. Even when carrying the Glock, I always carry at least one spare mag. Just makes me feel "safer" and "more secure" knowing I have a backup.

What I carry depends on my dress, where I'm going, what time of day/night etc. But - suffice to say - I am confident in my abilities to defend myself and put multiple effect shots on target COM at "normal" fighting distances with any of my carry guns, even my lowly Ruger LCP .380

As for carrying two firearms, I rarely do so. On occassion I've been known to carry both my Glock and an LCP or J-frame as backup. For a while I carried my Walther PPS IWB and LCP in the pocket, with no backup mags for either. But I just don't like the idea of no backup mags - even more than I dislike the idea of no backup gun. And two guns with two reloads each is just a bit much for me to carry without a "duty belt". Not saying I can't do it, but for me, personally, it's overkill.

So, that's what I do. But you need to decide what is comfortable and "comforting" for you.

I once shot and killed 14 communist ninjas with a well placed .45 ACP hollowpoint in the middle of each of their foreheads. I knew they were commies because they were all dressed in red ninja clothes and kept quoting from Mao's Little Red Book at me. I kept the 15th round for myself, just in case there were 20 ninjas, but happily, they were all dead and it wasn't necessary. I then fired a grappling hook over the top parapet of the building next to me, activated the small motor in my wrist pack, and hoisted all 300 lbs of my fat behind up to the roof where I executed a tactical somersault and a reload.

Another time, I stumbled across a gang fight between 40 Crips and 40 Bloods, who all turned their focus on me — I being the only pasty faced fat cracker in the neighborhood at the time. I executed a perfectly choreographed Gramiton Gun Kata, killing all of them, and then somersaulted over the top of a dumpster behind which I executed a tactical reload. When the smoke cleared, I jumped on my Segway and sped away.

But other than that, I try to keep things on the low down 'cause I've got a bad back...

Keep em coming. The ninja killings were great - at least I don't have to worry about them any more

So far I think I'm happy with my glock 27 and 10 rounds of ammo. Do have a LCP I could also carry but still not convinced I need both.

IIRC, a personal defense gun battle boils down to "3-3-3".

That's 3 shots fired, at 3 yards, in 3 seconds.

Has anyone else heard this?

I carry one or two mags and a P3AT as a BUG. I guess I am just not trusting enough in my own abilities or in a man made tool not to.
