We're waiting again!

Same old thing, checking the website daily to see when the status changes, so we can then expect a couple of items in the mail! :waiting:

...only this time we're waiting for a couple of rifles! We qualified for the CMP in January (that day was a story all in itself, a bunch of fun with the PSC highpower folks, thanks Darwin!), and we fell in love with the beautiful old M1 Garands we borrowed from the Club. We had a lot of relatives (including our sons) who have been more than familiar with these as GI's.

We quickly ordered two from the CMP, and received the "Don't-Bug-Us" emails last week. So, we have to wait an drool some more weeks before hearing anything more. (As DynaBlue says, like kids in a toy store, with our last quarter....) Uhh, yes, we ordered two.... :boxing

Seems as if we've been down this road recently, and we knew you folks would understand! :tiphat:

Did you know the Texas CHL can be used instead of going to a match now?

I'm an old-time Garand fan - which, these days, means before Saving Private Ryan came out :smilelol5:
With you on that one. Heh, we watched the Combat! series -- when it first aired!

One of my play rifles (out in our pastures, relating to another thread) was a M1903 training rifle that one of my uncles used early in WWII (and our kids played with as well -- even without permission). That's another we'd like to find a (working) partner for.

references?

don't you still need to be a citizen to qualify for a CMP Garand, or does this just replace the competition requirement?

Garands are cool. I can't think of a Garand without thinking "boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, PING!"

There are several requirements you have to meet, since it's a federally-backed program (hey, they did something right!). Note they used to be federally-funded, but now are just federally-sponsored. A recent forum message indicated they've released over 500,000 Garands through the program since it started in 1968; no telling how many are left.

Some xnips from that page (I hope I got 'em all):

1) Proof of U.S. Citizenship
2) Proof of Age
3) Membership in CMP Affiliated Organization (TSRA worked for us)
4) Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity:

You must provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe handling of firearms and range procedures. Your marksmanship related activity does not have to be with highpower rifles; it can be with smallbore rifles, pistols, air guns or shotguns. Proof of marksmanship participation can be provided by documenting any of the following:
- Current or past military service.
- Current or past law enforcement service
- Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin).
- Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor).
- Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status.
- Concealed Carry License.
- Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training.
- FFL or C&R license.
- Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training.
- Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing shooting activity. A form for use in completing and certifying your range firing can be downloaded from the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/forms/marksmanship.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
No proof of marksmanship required if over age 60. proof of club membership and citizenship required for all ages.
NOTE: Proof of marksmanship activity is not required for purchase of ammunition, parts, publications or memorabilia.

5) Be Legally Eligible to Purchase a Firearm (CHL doesn't help here, CMP are required to go through NICS)

thanks.
I'm more of a pistol-gripped modern semi-auto kind of guy (fn fal, ar-15), but there's something special about this quintessential American firearm,...which was designed by a Canadian :-)

I got my last order in under 30 days. It was a Garand and 2 carbines. The Garands I have ordered all looked literally brand new and they were just Service Grade. The carbines looked well used in the stock area but the metal was new looking and they were rack grades. I definitely recommend CMP rifles. Equivalent and lower quality rifles were at the recent HGCA show for 700-1800 dollars.

We also went with Service Grades, as Leon at the South Store convinced us (we called first, to try to get some idea of what we were doing). We added a request for WWII S/N's in the order (asking a lot, we know), so we're sorta like "expectant parents." :waiting:

Now we've started to wonder about picking up a M1 Carbine, to let DynaBlue build up to the heavy Garand. At least, it's a reason.... :evil2:
