Secure area at airport?

I was just recently talking with a co worker who had taken their CHL class. We were on the subjects of airports and they were told by their instructor that secure areas for airports are designated by the local airport authority and varied from airport to airport. It was up to the CHL holder to call the authority to see where the secure area began. This could mean that the roads leading to the airport could be secured thus preventing a CHl from carrying on those roads or possibly to parking garages. This did not sound right to me as i thought secure area would consist of that inside a security check point. i guess the question is if i am missing something when i read the law or is there something else i am unaware of? I drive to the airport quite a but to pick up family and friends and it would sure be nice to have that clear in my mind. thanks.

We have enough problems without shoddy instructors teaching fiction. The definition is right there in 46.03 in black and white.
"Secured area" means an area of an airport terminal building to which access is controlled by the inspection of persons and property under federal law.

I agree boomerang. Definition of "secured area of an airport"(that you quoted correctly): P. 39 of the Handbook and it's
PC 46.03(c)(2)

A word to the wise though, regarding Love Field, Dallas' older airport:
On another thread somewhere on the forum, someone (jimlongley?) stated
that some of the Dallas PD cops who patrol Love will arrest anyone, anywhere
in the Love field terminal, even the unsecured areas if they find a gun.
But of course concealed is well..... you know. Don't make me say it.
My CHL instructor said that he has carried into the unsecured areas of DFW airport.

From the info I have gatered from local LEO's the secure area that is off limits is the SIDA (Security Identification Display Area) this the area around the terminal area designated for airline use only unless you are an airline or airport employee with proper clearance you won't be in that area. As a private pilot I carry on the general aviation ramp all the time with no problems but I avoid the SIDA at all times when armed. I would check with your local airport authority before carrying outside your car at an airport to be sure.
