HOUSTON -- Police released surveillance video Wednesday of two men accused of breaking into a southwest Houston gun store by crawling through the ceiling.
Investigators said the men targeted SOG Armory and Carter's Country in the early morning hours of Jan. 21, but only managed to get inside one of the gun shops.
The men went to a pharmacy located next door to Carter’s Country after they failed to get inside SOG Armory’s front door, police said.
"They came in through the roof and crawled into the air conditioner ducts and into the crawl space in the ceiling," said Officer Ken Kalka.
Video shows a man wearing a head lamp and attempting to get into a safe in the drug store before he punches through the wall of one office to get to the gun shop, police said.
That is where police said more than 20 small-caliber pistols were stolen.
Investigators said they still are not sure how the criminals got on the roof. Police said no tools or finger prints were found. The clothing worn by the suspects seen in the video is the best link between the two crimes, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Houston police.
Been to SOG before...I have seen them lock up all the merchandise in a big vault in the back when they close...Can't see how that would have produced for the dunderheads doing the burglaries this time...
Will probably see the SOG guys at the Pasadena show on Saturday...See what they say...
But then again, your average burglar is not the sharpest bowling ball in the bag, so to speak...

I am amazed they did not have a monitored alarm system.

Lot of good that might have done them. I am the GM of a bar on it's third, and looking for it's fourth "monitored alarm system" company. Fat lot of luck getting them to get the call order right. Hopefully our camera company, new to the alarm business, hasn't had time to beauraucratize efficiency out of the equation.

My business is in Plano, so the alarm company here notifies the Police and they come check out the call. They actually respond fairly quick. Quick enough that those guys would have been caught in the act. Now that I read your post I do remember hearing something about Dallas Police no longer responding to business burglaries until after the alarm company has gone by. Is this correct?

Apparently they didn't lock up
all the merchandise this time... unfortunately.
One place I was stationed overseas we had an office that had to be made into a more secure area. It had a drop ceiling with ducting and so forth up there. It also had barbed wire running back and forth all over the place, and grill barriers placed in the ducting...
On a brighter note, this reminded me of my all time favorite video of a burglar -- who entered thru the ceiling...

Rooftop HVAC units present a very easy method of getting into a building. A panel on the side of the unit can be removed by taking a few screws out. The main duct opening is right there. Drop through and your in the building. There should have been some kind of bars welded in place across the plenums to make access more difficult. As crazy as it may sound, it is not the norm to place any kind of bars across these openings. But in a gun shop or other place containing high value items, this should be done. 99.9% of the commercial buildings with roof top packaged units can be broken into using this method. All it takes is a flat head screwdriver and a guy who is gutsy(or dumb) enough to drop through the metal plenum. One could suffer some pretty serious cuts doing this, as sheet metal plenums have razor sharp edges.

Ditto on the HVAC problem. I'm in the business and I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.
I'm also surprised they did not knock down cameras or seem to look for the DVR.

I worked for a company in the early 70's after the building was broke into once all duct work and exhaust fans receive a web of superfine wiring tied into the alarm system.

Human nature being what it is, we often wait until after the fact to fix something that many times won't happen again.
Like getting a burglar alarm after you've been hit.
And then getting it monitored after you've been hit again.

Yep....and I bet they do something about that duct work issue now that it has been so eloquently pointed out to them by the burglars.
