My wife doesn’t know it yet but I am thinking about buying an M1 Garand. Used in WWII. Good shape. Still serviceable.

Well, those poor souls down at the Admiral Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg will be upset that they'll have to change one of their displays.

That's actually the first place that I saw that quote.

You will be very, very happy if you get the Garand!

And if you are anywhere near Houston, we have 4 Garand matches a year - and other clubs have them too.

I am going to have to look through my books now to find out where I saw that quote.

I am considering either the Special or Correct grade Garand. I mentioned it to my wife yesterday. I haven’t mentioned the price yet.

When I get it I hope to see you.

It's apocryphal. You'll never find the actual attribution. That said, Yamamoto was very much against attacking the U.S., and he was considered by Tōjō to be a political opponent — to point where the Japanese army kept him under constant surveillance and actually attempted at one point to "place him under guard." Yamamoto was familiar with life in the U.S., having studied at Harvard from 1919–1921, and then was later a naval attaché in Washington D.C. So, even though he may never have uttered those words, he would have certainly been aware of this unique character of American citizenship, and it is not hard to believe that he might have uttered something close to these words in some casual context at some point or other.

Even the Service Grade will shoot well and be a pleasure! Rack Grade maybe, maybe not - they say some are very good, some are "shot out" but I have no direct knowledge.

Our next Garand Match at Bayou Rifles is this Saturday - signup 7:00-7:30 AM. There will be a Garand to borrow, ammunition is issued, match fee is $20 (maybe $25 for non-members but I don't think so) including ammo and a short talk on how to load the Garand without pinching your thumb. All are welcome, low-key fun match.

And whether or not he really said it, as TAM said - he probably thought it.
