What a lousy job by the media, as usual. He is not a victim, he is a thief that got caught.

I feel bad for the family's, but It's hard to realize that you failed as a family, a parent, a a brother or sister, mother or father, and that your son/daughter threatened another Human Animal to the point that they had no choice but the Fight back.
