Went to dissasemble the kimber this weekend for a good cleaning and what do you know. Spring sent the cap flying across the room like the button off fat mans pants. Let's just say i take it real slow and keep strong pressure on the spring when turning the bushing now.

Did something similar the first time I removed the trigger assembly from my AR. one of the parts flew off with enough force to put a nice dent in the garage fridge :eek6

I spent a good 30min last Saturday looking for a launched 1911 bushing, it wan't the first time, and it probably won't be the last...

Great! Now we're going to have to listen to a buncha twaddle from the Glock Guys about how their ugly blocks of stamped steel don't need bushing wrenches, and how JBM sits at Gaston Glock's feet, and how that simplicity is worth the hole in their leg, yada yada yada ad infinitum. :mrgreen:

You know, I don't have to have any special tools to take my Glock apart....

:lol::

That maybe but all I need to do using no tools is to take my M&P apart and put it all in an ultra-sonic bath to clean it. No need to detail strip it! Same with the Glocks. :rolll

I don't use any special tools to field strip my Kimber either. The butt end of the Kimber magazine is used to depress the spring cap, rotate the bushing by hand, release pressure.

But it did take me a while to learn it. I actually an "idiot mark" center forehead before I learned to do it right.

WOW, must be a heck of a recoil spring. Some 1911s have a larger coil on the plug end of the recoil spring to kinda keep that puppy from sailing across the room if you slip.

An alternate method for field stripping the 1911 is to leave the bushing in place, grip the slide with the left hand, slide it back out of battery until the slide stop lines up with the field stripping notch, use the tip of your middle finger on your left hand (or whichever feels natural) to press the slide stop into the frame, get a good grip on the slide assembly and dust cover portion of the frame with your left hand, remove the slide stop with your right hand, grip the frame with the right hand and slide the two assemblies apart slowly as you control the recoil spring. Even if done carelessly, the recoil spring won't sail across...more like a snake trying to squirm its way out.

Then you can remove the bushing with no spring pressure on it.

There it is... It only took you 5 minutes to post this after I posted. "rlol"

You're right, you don't need any tools to field strip your Glock. But you do need to make sure you have a battle dressing and a tourniquet on hand before you attempt reholstering. "rlol" :smilelol5:

the first time you disassemble something with all those springy thingies, put a sheet over your head and workbench ... a workbench tent..... at least it narrows down the search area. Oh, and wear safety glasses too.... still gonna need good vision, even to find the springy thingies in the workbench tent.

Nope, you just need to engage the safety. The cognitive safety. The one that keeps your finger off the trigger when it doesn't need to be there!

But, if you don't think you have enough intelligence to handle that, then you just keep on carrying your nickel plated sissy pistol and trust your life to a mechanical safety device.
