Guys,

Of course anyone can get a gun and do what they please with it without a background check, but I've always felt safe at Red's and Eagle Peak that I'm amongst the good, law abiding, sane shooters. My assertion is that gun rentals can, and have attracted crazies and dangerously inexperienced shooters to the gun ranges, so I don't have problem with them requiring a CHL to rent a gun.

Now-I wanna' hear other opinions; I have a bias 'cause I don't rent guns. I've got my own collection, and they never seem to have the exact gun that I want to try out anyway and the ammo you have to buy is overpriced. Maybe Red would not be able to stay in business without renters, and maybe there are a lot of you guys who like to rent guns. Thoughts?

The only time we have ever rented guns was when my wife was trying to figure out which gun she wanted for cc. We had completed our class but had not yet received our plastic.

She was able to rent 4 different guns with enough ammo for each gun to get a feel for the weapon for a total of $60. This was money well spent because it completely changed her mind about the weapon she was going to purchase.

I really don't see the difference in someone renting a gun and someone going to the range for the first time with the weapon they just purchased. Of course I am also opposed to any new "laws" affecting what we can and can't do with guns.

Granted, yes, crazies can go rent a gun and shoot themself or others at the range but those are very rare incidents.
I have to disagree that a CHL should be required to rent a handgun. Why should somone who is unsure if they even like guns or not have to go through the process of obtaining something that they will never use if they decide it wasnt for them after all? Then they are out all that time and approx 250.00 for the class and state fees.
The whole purpose of renting a gun is so you dont have to spend a small fortune to try something new and possibly wind up buying something you're not going to be happy with.
I cant tell you how many guns I test fired before I finally decided to go off and get my CHL. If I had been required to get my CHL first Im not 100% sure I would have ever gone through the process.
And lets not forget that a CHL is not required to BUY a gun, so why would we make it a requirement to rent one?

Same. The next stage of my fiendish plan to get the wife a 9mm is to take her to a place that rents some different ones to try out. I successfully did so with her Bersa and she fell in love with the gun.

Its not the renters I worry about. Its the yahoos who don't have a clue and do things like wave a gun around, go up to the line when there is a ceasefire etc.

EDIT: Eagle peak eh. I think Austinrealtor and I both go there as well...

Gun Rentals, legal? Yes. Otherwise we will lose tons of new Shooters. How many shooters have we gained because of Places like Reds and Eagle Peak? A ton.
Thats like saying I cant let my friends shoot my guns at the range becase they dont have a CHL.

Nah, they will sell you insurance if you don't have it.

As I stated in the other thread, outlawing gun rentals because of those reasons makes as much sense as outlawing truck rentals because of the Oklahoma City bombing.

Doesn't make much sense. I rented and tried out Glocks, SIGs, HKs and Kimber before I decided what to buy. Just buying something because it looks cool and is shiny is pretty dumb. I like to try stuff out first.

Nope, it makes as much sense as outlawing rentals to people who have a history of DWIs. I only said CHL because it wouldn't be practical to do an NIC background check when renting a gun. Are any of you guys against NIC background checks? Handing a box of ammo and a handgun to anyone over 21 is doing just that.

I don't think that a person should ever have to prove they are competent to own a gun, but when something has been discovered like felonies, domestic violence, or serious mental illness (like the Florida women, or the guy in another thread that kept wandering into a church), I don't want to be in the lane next to them at Red's.

Yep-That's where my bias kicks in. Every time I've been in the market for a new gun, there was never an example of the ones that I was interested in for rent. You'll never see a Bersa, or an LCP, or a Taurus 94 to rent, so I just spent a lot of time doing research about things that matter to me like trigger weight, reliability, perceived recoil, accuracy, and concealability, and I made my decision based on those factors. Sure that 20 minute test drive helps, but it's the hours of research, and Consumer Reports that should determine a car purchase.

(and of course being able to shoot for more than 60 minutes) Are you the guy that I met on 2-20 with the first name starting with a "J" that was shooting the exact Bersa Ultra Compact 9 as me? Grrrr- Red told me before my first Bersa purchase that he wouldn't carry Bersas because they were garbage; all the while he was trying to sell me a Kel-Tec P9.

Don't have a Bersa compact 9mm, but yea there. Who knows? I have a terrible memory.
Bersas are excellent 380s. Its the only "full size .380" I've seen outside of a Walther (full size being very relative term). Our's is a bit finicky on ammo which is not great right now due to shortages, but its hard to find anything currently.
