I took my Kimber out today and ran a couple hundred rounds through it.....no problems.

I got home and started to clean it....and found that the guide rod had snapped off durring shooting without me noticeing....

I was shocked and pleasently surprised that my gun kept on going with such a failure.

Call Kimber they will take care of you and send a replacement unit. The Guide problem is not a common one, but its been known to happen.

It doesn't always keep going - mine didn't.

Prevention consists of following the spring and guide rod unit replacement schedule in the manual and on the Kimber web site.

I have already ordered a new guide rod.

Gun only has 300 rounds down the pipe (including today).

If this is going to be my carry gun I was just curious as to how common this was as it is well below the replacement level (1800 rounds)

Where did you find the replacement interval?

Owners manual. You replace the recoil spring and guide rod as a unit and the recoil spring is set for 1800 rounds.

Its nice to know they have great customer service, but in 300rds a guide rod failed? Its been said before but for how much they cost I just don't see the draw some people have towards them other than being very pretty. There are other brands that cost less and don't have as many failures. I here great things about Springfield and Colt, but I don't here as many failures out of them. Not to say they don't fail, but I just don't here of the same types of quality issues. It sounds like Kimber has a big head and makes great LOOKING products with low quality parts installed. I know it is just a machine and machines fail regularly, I still don't like it and wouldn't buy one unless it was just a ridiculous deal.
