Finally getting one

Hey guys,
I've been planning on getting my CHL for a long while now, and just finally turned 21 (I know I should have taken the test before) in September, but I've been able to talk my dad into coming with me now. I was wondering where I can find information on finding a class in the DFW area next weekend (preferably FW area) since it has been a while since I posted regularly on here I've forgotten where to find everything (I did look in the classes forum but saw nothing, and I do believe it was for posting classes, not looking for classes) also since we only have my Glock 19, it would be a plus to be at a place where my father can rent a semi-auto (we have 4 other revolvers but that's our only semi-auto). Thanks in advance, and I'm happy to be finally taking the plunge

Most of the rifle ranges and gunshops offer classes/pictures/FP/notary services and offer SA loaners for the program.
Bass Pro also offers all-inclusive classes with SA loaners.

If you take it with Crossfire you might want to consider getting your Utah license for only $25 more.

Highly, Highly, Highly recommend Crossfire to get your CHL training. Linda and Marty also rent Glocks for use in the class if you don't have one or want to shoot one of theirs. Not sure if they have a class this weekend, but they are worth waiting for.
You might try Greybeard at
http://www.dentoncountysports.com. He is in Denton County and also rents guns for use in the class and I recommend him also.

Thanks guys! Crossfire's next class is April 10, I would love to get Utah with it too, I want it before I go camping in Big Bend this summer, so do y'all think if I take it April 10th I'll have the license by say early - mid june-ish?

It's not that I'm opposed to it but can someone give me a logical reason why a Texas resident would need or want a Utah CHL in addition to his Texas CHL.
Never mind, I see that Ohio, Washington, and Minnesota don't honor Texas CHL...If one travels to those states that's important.

For traveling through states that do not honor Texas CHL but do honor Utah's, while carrying.

Thanks Joe, I was reading that on Crossfire's site while you were telling me...Thanks.

JNMAR,
I took my class from Keith McGuire in down town Ft. Worth. You can give him a call at 817-475-6413 to see when his next class will be held. He charges $95.00 for the class. You will get everything you need, figure prints, pictures, range, etc. He also rents guns at no charge, all you have to do is buy the ammo. Great instuctor. Good luck.

There's a secondary argument too in favor of it. If your CHL gets temporarily suspended for any reason, say pending an investigation of a righteous shooting, you cannot continue to carry. However, if you have a Utah CFP, you may continue to carry under its authority until your CHL is returned.

Another reason for the Utah license is if your wallet gets lost or stolen. If you carry your CHL in your wallet you can't carry until you get a replacement card. You could then carry using the Utah license until your replacement Texas one comes in the mail.
That's some darned tootin' bang for your buck for only $25 extra.

Interesting. When I was recently stripped of my Glock and CHL I felt naked. I know a back up gun is a good idea but a secondary CHL would go nicely with it.So you don't have to be a Utah resident to apply for a CHL

Would'nt you have to at least travel there for the test.

No, there are Utah instructors here in Texas. Here is the list

I recommend
CrossFire Training (Crossfire is one of our Moderators) if you can make it to the Ft Worth area. If not, then someone may be able to recommend one in the Austin/Round Rock area for you.

So let me get this straight, if I were to receive an affidavit for suspension of my CHL from the state of TX. I could still carry legally with my Utah CFP?
