Took advantage of NM's reciprocity last week

I know this probably belongs in the "Other States" subforum, but I thought it may get wider 'play' here. We went to New Mexico for Spring Break last week, and I had my first opportunity to take advantage of that fair state's reciprocity agreement with Texas. It didn't even feel funny when we crossed over into Clovis from Farwell. You've just got to keep a sharp eye out when stopping for meals.
According to New Mexico statutes, you cannot carry into any business that serves alcohol for consumption on-site. They have a nice little reminder sign (see below), but it is much harder to spot than our own 30.06 posting. It was only about 8.5x11 inches, and posted on the bottom of the window. Great if you are of Oompa Loompa height, not so good if you are close to Manu Ginobli's stature. Frankly, it is easier to look for the neon beer signs in the window.
I actually didn't need to carry my sidearm on the ski mountain, though a turkey did run across the trail early one morning. Luckily, she wasn't coming straight for me. Still, it was nice to know I had the option to carry everywhere else we went. My 1911 was a comforting weight on my hip when we had a blowout in rural country on the way back. I would highly recommend the Silver Moon Cafe if you are ever in Santa Rosa, NM on I-40. Have the Green Chili Stew. It is sublime!
The wording washed out by the glare reads "NEW MEXICO LAW [SEC. 30-7-3]"
Oh, on the way out of Angel Fire, just past 'downtown', a cow elk stood by the side of the road chewing her cud. The first words from my 9 year old daughter? "Daddy, get your rifle!" Gotta love that girl.

64 between Taos and Raton is a pretty drive. Well, between Taos and Cimarron, for sure.
Did you visit the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge on your Spring Break?

64 IS a nice drive, but we didn't go that way this time. We took 434 south out of Angel Fire down to Las Vegas, so Taos was "out of the way" for us this time. We'll have to hit it on a follow up trip though. Thanks for the tip!

My first thought was, "There are fourth degree felonies?"
Turns out there are, and 5th degree ones too. Wow, thanks Google. How did I go all these years without ever hearing of anything past 3rd degree?
I have yet to visit NM since getting my CHL, but I'll be over there sooner or later snowboarding. Glad to know I can carry concealed unlike when I went to Cali.

Just remember, if you
do carry on the slopes, fall on your weak side when you go down. No bruise that way. Which begs the question of why should you carry on the slopes? Well, haven't you seen any of the James Bond movies?!?
For me, it was just like carrying in Texas, except for the whole no-carry-in-a-place-that-sells-booze-for-on-site-use thing.

For any Texan going to NM, remember that
under NM CHL rules, you are only allowed ONE gun
on you.
No BUG's allowed in NM.

One gun is OK but two or more is just dangerous? How strange.

I would probably just pocket carry my 642. Not too worried about falling on it if it's in my front pocket.
You're asking the wrong question, why
wouldn't you wanna carry on the slopes?
I've heard / seen some crazy things out on the mountains. From an old guys talking about getting his rifle and shooting all these yuppies who are skiing wrong and snowboarding on HIS mountain to a couple all out brawls.

New Mexico changed their law to allow restaurant carry, but it doesn't take effect until July 1, 2010.

Actually, the rule is that you can only CONCEAL one gun in NM. Strap on as many as you'd like, but only one can be concealed on your person. Since Texas prohibits Open Carry though, I suppose that is why we can only carry one. Or is it OK to OC in a reciprocal state where it is allowed with our non-OC licenses?

I suppose you are right: 24/7, etc. I forgot to pack the LCR, what with the whole one-gun thing, so I was 'stuck' with my full-size 1911 for the week. Now that thing is hard to tuck in your front pocket!
Then again, you're one of them thar snowboarders. That makes you suspect from the start.

Always getting into trouble, they are - line jumping and cutting people off and going off-trail. Well,
some of them anyway - certainly not
all of them. There was the trio of obvious Spring Breakers who kept fighting in line one day. Don't know what their problem was - just wished they'd hurry up and stop punching on each other for no good reason.

Actually no license required to OC in NM, although the only time I did it I felt like I had painted a big target on my back the instant some gang banger types came into the business I was shopping at. They walked in, noticed my gun, talked among themselves for about a minute then fled the store. But then again I was in Hobbs so it could have been much worse. But with that said, I am still a proponent for open carry, I just won't do it much if at all.

Whenever you're in another state, you follow
their rules, not your home state's. You can OC all you want in NM, no matter what Texas says about it. It's just like you can't restaurant carry there until July 1, even though it's legal in Texas.

I also took advantage of NM reciprocity last week. I went a step farther and did the same in Colorado also. I carried everywhere we went except on the slopes and on our visit to the Air Force Academy.
I left the Xd at my sister in laws for the Academy trip. You should have seen the look on my wife's face when we rolled up to the entrance and the guard asked me if we had any weapons in the car. I said no sir. She then said " I thought we were in trouble but, I should have known that you were smart enough to leave it behind." I just smiled. It was a good trip. Mighty pretty up that way too.
