The USA turns over gun purchase records to Mexico?

Am I reading this wrong? Did they just give a 3rd world country carte blanche access to our gun records? Call it registration up north, FFL transfers elsewhere...

And yet some people will try to tell you we don't have de facto gun registration.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you supported Obama?

Apparently it's not just Mexico but at least 30 other foreign countries as well. Here's a link to the US Dept of State's eTrace page.

http://www.state.gov/p/wha/rls/fs/2009/121671.htm

and the web page came along 6 April, '09 so I would question how much, if anything, Obama had to do with it...

If this means that US authorities are looking up trace info and then providing the limited result to Mexican authorities, I don't like it. :grumble

If this means that US authorities have given carte blanche access to files on US gun buyers, then as far as I am concerned this is an act of TREASON :mad5 .... showing a foreign government who has guns within US borders? Perhaps if a foreign power has this information it won't be so concerned about invading the US mainland and being attacked by "a rifle behind every blade of grass."

Earlier this week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton led a high level White House delegation to Mexico. Secretary Clinton told the Mexican government the two countries will work “together to solve the problems posed by the criminal cartels that stock the streets on your cities and ours.”‪

Following up on a promise to support Mexico, the United States has provided the Mexican government with a gun tracking system called “E-Trace” that will allow Mexican authorities to trace firearms from their point of sale, including within the United States.
Treason is the correct word!! I'd say that the Mexican authorities who HAVE that database have already been cracked by the cartels or whoever, AND it is known who buys what where! Never before has the term " caveat emptor " meant so much!!!

I don't see anything to indicate that they gave them the database. eTrace is a web based system for querying the database by serial number, name, etc. I'm not sure how this is going to help them. Its hard to believe that most of the weapons in Mexico came from individual purchases in the US.

Great point, maybe the antis will finally GET IT when Mexican drug cartel hit men start killing US citizens in their homes before stealing all their guns. The systematic execution of gun owners on the "heavy buyer" lists will be as simplistic to track as The Terminator killing every Sarah Conner in the phone book until he gets to the right one.

But then again, why would the antis care about a few dead gun nuts? After all they deserved what they got for owning guns in the first place, right? Just one more reason all guns should be banned anyway: it's a public health hazzard provable by statistics - if you own guns your 300% more likely to die in a home invasion by MexiNarcoGangs.

Enter "John Doe" - Result: "owns four guns, lives at this address"
Enter "Jane Doe" - Result: "owns three guns, lives at this address"
Enter .... Results ....

Might take some time, but they do have access to the whole database in the scenario you describe.

Sorry guys, but this appears to be another tempest in a teapot. The software they were given allows them to enter requests for traces on a 24/7 basis. It further allows them to access the status of their traces and make some statistical reports on traces. The only names they have access to are the ones that have had weapons traced to them. I am unsure if that is limited to the traces they requested or all guns traced, but either way it is a small number. And given that the average gun traced was sold more than ten years earlier, I am not sure this has any significant value whatsoever, either to the governments, the criminals, or to our police officers who get the data.

I don't mind giving them access, because it certainly does not give them any type of gun registration database for the average American citizen. After all, traces are only small fraction of guns sold each year. It is not something to worry about. With 30 countries having access already, giving access to Mexico is the least of our problems.
