Has anyone every lost there gun while carrying? If so, what were the legal reprocussions (sp?) of losing your firearm in public?

If you are referring to having your gun skipping across the floor, I've seen at least a few posts here. It's even happened to my bride.

The best post I remember included the guy's remark as he picked it up and reholstered. "Darn, I've been trying to teach it not to do that."

no i was referring to misplacing your firearm while in public. I.E. going to a baseball game in a public area with kids all around and it falling out of your holster somewhere and not retrieving it.

Fortunately, I have not done this. If your gun was found by a minor and some one was injured, I would imagine that you could be charged with a crime. The same as leaving your gun on a table where it was accessible to a child.

Petsmart has some pretty good retractable leashes for sale.

I hope this was not an actual event, just a theoretical event. Could turn out really badly with kids around.

Why did (would) your weapon fall out?
Why did (you) not pick up the weapon, regardless of where you were when it fell out?

It could fall out if you made some type of movement and your holster didn't retain the weapon. Maybe he was playing with his kids, rolling around on the ground in a park. I think he was referring to a theoretical incident where he did not notice that it fell out until he got back home.

This is another reason to ensure you use quality gear. A quality holster coupled with a decent gun belt will retain your weapon under all but the most extreme activities.

i left home with my iswb holster and i thought i had my firearm with me. we went to a ball game and after the game we went out. We went to a pool hall where I noticed it was missing, when I was gonna remove it and store it so I could go in where they serve alcohol. I figured I had just left it home (which i did) but the thought did enter my head about it falling out while watching the game. What if I lost my gun and hadn't noticed it missing for several hours later, it gets found, turned into the police and they run the numbers tracing it back to me. Could I lose my license and/or get charges pressed against me?

Why I like IWB holsters: if I don't feel my gun gouge me in the ribs I know it's not there "immediately". Figure if it does fall out of my IWB it will be in my underwear.

When you carry in a comfortable holster, you acclimate to the weight, so you probably don't think about it not being there when you never put it on in the first place. If you were carrying and suddenly had 1.5 - 2 lbs fall out, I would almost bet you would feel the change in weight and realize you were sans-pistol. The fact that you were not carrying it all along was why you really didn't think about it not being there, if that makes sense.

Also, depending on what kind of ball game you were attending, you possibly couldn't have carried legally anyway (school or professional.) And, depending on the pool hall you went to, it may not have actually been a 51% establishment, so you may have been legal carrying there unless you were planning to drink quite a bit and be intoxicated.

There are typically a few news stories every year about people finding guns lost by LEOs. There may be more that don't make the news because they're not turned in.
