and think I have a handle on traveling with my hand gun by air to Atlanta GA for a biz trip.

What I was looking for is recent experience on TSA issues generally or processing though either Killeen or Atlanta airport

My plan is to take either my XD .40 compact or S&W .40VE , two mags, 2 20 round factory packed boxs of ammo in a small locked container, placed in a small checked bag.

Any info relative to checking into either airport would be a great assistance....

Well, this is kind of hazy, but maybe it can act
as a "heads up" to you.

My NRA emails detail what's going on in various states
with regard to gun legislation. Even though Georgia is
a pro-2A state, it doesn't seem like it's as good as Texas
to its CHL's.

Pending in the GA legislature is a change which would allow
CHL's to carry in the parking lots and the unsecured areas of
airports. In Texas we can carry in those 2 areas already,
even though forum member jimlongley says that most of the
LEO's at Love Field, Dallas, would be inclined to arrest anyone
they knew was packing.

So even if you meet the packaging requirements for your gun
and ammo, it's unclear how legal you would be going from the
luggage pickup area to your rental car.

Another quirk of GA CHL law is that if you go to a bar, you
are not allowed to even leave your gun in the vehicle. The
workaround for this is to park on the street, or in some lot
which is not owned by the drinking establishment.

IANAL, YMMV. Georgia laws are not my forte, but I wanted
to blather here a bit on what I do know.

I was a Georgia resident for 7 years, but didn't have a gun
during that time.
