Guys,

I Googled it and couldn't get a good answer. Is the term "auto" or "automatic" an abbreviation for semi-automatic weapon, or does it mean automatic loader? When I say auto I mean automatic loader; I often say things like, "I carry an auto-loader 'cause a revolver just doesn't have a big enough round capacity." Does it mean both?

"Automatic" means a weapon that fires continuously with one pull of the trigger a "machine gun" "Semi-Automatic" or "Semi-Auto" is a weapon that fires and reloads itself with each pull of the trigger. "Auto-loader" is a synonym for "semi-automatic" An "Auto" is what you drive.

I always ask when I'm buying a car is the model has a safety that will keep it from driving off on its own and running someone over.

I used to have a semi-automatic car; it had no manual clutch, but you had to shift gears.

They also make them with paddle shifters or a bump shifter these days.

Not sure if those are the technical terms, but basically it's an automatic with the option of manually shifting:

Well when I say it, I mean auto-loader, 'cause that's what it is! With the semi-automatic definition, a DA revolver is also an automatic 'cause it goes bang every time you pull the trigger.

Nope, it was a true manual with no clutch. You had to shift it. I have had those with bump or paddle shifters, like my '70 442 with the Hurst dual-gate shifter
