As I understand it the law says that you cannot carrying in a building ("premises") on a college campus.

Without sharing too many details, I currently spend a lot of time in a temporary office trailer that resides on a piece of property that is owned by a university (the trailer is not owned by the university). Technically, the property is not part of the university's campus (so I'm told), however it is very close to the campus (within a couple minute's walking distance). There are several privately owned buildings that separate this particular piece of property from the actual campus.

What are everyone's thoughts on carrying while I'm in this "building"? Is it legal?

I would have to say no, its not legal. Since the building you are in is owned and operated by the school, it could easily be argued that it is part of the "premesis", even if it is not in direct contact to the campus grounds.

This particular building is neither owned nor operated by the school. It is a rented office trailer being controlled by a company NOT affiliated with the university.

However, it is sitting on property (a construction site in this case) that is owned by the school and is disconnected from the actual campus. Technically, the spot where the trailer actually sits may not even be owned by university, but the actual job site is.

I think you are good to go. Premises is inside buildings. Not parking lots, fields, roadways, or sidewalks.
But just like the saying about construction that: "one is always working themselves out of a job", You are probably going to be working yourself out of a place to carry. Because at some point if you are working on putting up a building for the university, it is going to become university "premises".
Whether that is before the construction company finishes, or after the university "accepts the building", after final construction might be your arguable points.
