Need a little advice on my grouping for close range hunting

First a little background info. I have no problem shooting 3-4 inch groups with my Glock 27 at 10-12 yards at a pretty fast rate of fire for CC but the 10mm is a beast compared to my .40. I go along and hunt with family and friends from time to time but have never taken the 10mm. I usually just bring my .30 .30 win, which is good for 150+yards. A friend has a lot of land in east Texas and regularly hunts wild hogs, boar and whitetail on his land with a rifle and he brings his 10mm with him. He has had several 1 shot kills out to 50 yards with his 10mm. He has been hunting since he was 10 so I don't feel bad but I thought 15-20 yards would be a good place to start. Granted I know just because its a 10mm doesn't mean it can even begin to compare to a rifle but I would like to get good out to 20 yards at a decent rate of fire.
I went to the range today with my Glock 20sf 10mm in an attempt to get good groups at about 17 yards. It takes my about 20 seconds to get all 15 rounds down range as fast as I can accurately while getting back on target after every shot. Granted I could shoot faster but this is more for a close range back up gun for hunting not self defense. I shot 6 clips of 15 rounds and used 3 silhouettes. This was all done with 10mm hot loads. All loads were various Double Tap rounds ranging from 165-200 grain rounds. My groupings averaged about 8-10 inches. Is this about average or pretty far apart? Also my grouping is consistent but I am pulling a little right and down when aiming for dead center on the silhouette. I assume this is from the recoil. Any ideas on how to unlearn this behavior. If this was my brothers Glock 19 it would be a different story but the 10 is a handful. Any advice from hunters or competition shooters would be greatly appreciated.

As a long time hunter I don't see the need for this skill. Hunting and self defense are on opposite sides of the shooting spectrum. You are the attacker and should be able to take your time and aim carefully. You should just concentrate on the accuracy of a single shot being able to hit the mark and dispatch the animal. Wildly spraying ammo in the direction of an animal is dangerous to other hunters in the area and may end up in only wounding the game.

I would say that shooting dozens of rounds downrange at a paper target is not the same thing as squeezing off a single carefully aimed shot with your pistol. The proper question is, can you hit what you're aiming for with a single cold bore shot at any given distance?

Otherwise, stick to a rifle in which you have confidence.

BTW, in the original Bob Lee Swagger novel, Point of Impact, Bob Lee survives for a short time in a wilderness area while escaping from the FBI manhunt by using a Colt Delta Elite in 10mm to kill a hog for food. He sits with his back to a tree, draws up his knees, and props the pistol on top of his knees to take a single carefully aimed shot.

Of course, Bob Lee Swagger is only the greatest sniper who ever lived.

Dan20703, it looks like you and I were on the same page at almost the exact same time.

Haha! Yes we were.

I hunt with my Ruger GP-100 6" .357 and a red dot scpoe. It is all about making the first shot count and knowing your limitations. I never needed to take a second shot at a deer yet.

No! I did not mean that I was going to go out in the woods and unload a clip at an animal in an attempt to kill any game. If I conveyed that I am sorry. If I need a whole clip of 10mm I better run the other way. If I ever shot an animal at close range it would more then likely be a feral hog that was way to close for comfort. I don't plan to take any game at 50yards with a pistol.I will leave that for my friend. I just wanted to be able to have decent groups at 20 yards with a decent rate of fire. On more then one occasion I was to close for comfort to a feral hog. If you have ever seen those tusks in person you know what I mean. I don't mess with them! Having good grouping at 20 yards was just a personal goal to better my abilities with the 10mm. At 20 yards I could easily take a shot and hit game if I had time to take the shot. To be honest I have never shot on public land. Only on family and friends private land and leases. I have heard the horror stories of hunting on public lands and the over crowding during hunting season. My first thought with hunting is always safety first and I have only taken more then one shot once when hunting. I leave the hunting to the rifle. Like I said there is no replacement for a rifle. As for my title I should have labeled it something more like "need a little advice on my grouping for close range protection while hunting". Basically when I can't get to my rifle quick enough. Any advice on the grouping? I will slow my rate of fire next time out and take more time. Maybe I will just try it in 2-3 round bursts. I won't never need more then that. I just shoot the whole clip but I would ever really need it. My main concern is pulling down and to the right when shooting. Thanks

AndyC. Accuracy is my goal. Like I said in my last post. I am going to slow down my rate of fire and if you don't mind please tell me why I am pulling down and to the right. I think my main problem is I am trying to shot the 20 like it is my 27 and I have never really practiced with a handgun for more then personal protection within 15 yards. This is my first time to try to become proficient out to 20 yards with a handgun as powerful as the 10mm. I know many guys run true magnums at greater distances but I am honestly asking for help. Thanks

Even firing slow at 10 yards I pull a little to the right and low. Like I said, the recoil is sharper then my .40 and I might be anticipating it. A problem I never had with the .40. No advice will go on deaf ears. Thanks
