Yes, it's real. The Union paid for it, and it's the first of four to come! They get it. They hate the chief. They're a smaller union than the HPOA. Morale is at almost an all-time low, about like when Lee Brown ran the outfit.

Try not to get pulled over by HPD, 'cause they haven't been in a good mood...for a few years!

The HPD brass was NOT happy with this, by the way, because it tells the truth.

I think if I saw that and found out it was true I would move. That is messed up.

I am here becsue that is where the money is. I got here in 97 and got a CHL and Glock shortly after that. I carry 98% of the time.

I don't live far from Houston, but try to avoid it.
I carry most of the time anyway, but that doesn't mean I want to use it.

Sad, but true. The morale in the HPD is becoming almost as low as it is in the Border Patrol. The billboard is a good effort at speaking the truth about an administration that doesn't "get it" and maybe never shall.

I spent 4 days seated next to a couple of the nicest guys i've ever met. Both career LEOs. One is in a training capacity for the Houston PD.
He said, the force there is quickly becoming report takers only. Basically, the HPD is just been beaten over the head over "liabilty" issues.

Thank God for the First Amendment. Very few countries allow the brutal truth to be told. Those guys work with terrible staffing issues! I know that signs such as this do tick off the brass, but the message can't be ignored. The people who pay the salary need to know from the horses mouth they are not being protected.

I've been complaining about Hurtt for almost a year now. He is out of touch with the community and apparently his own officers.

It's a tough one to respond to the fallout from Katrina, and Hurtt seemed to prove early on that he wasn't up to the job.

Glad to see the Houston Police Patrolmen's Union response. Hurtt can't hide that. Wish Mayor White would start interviewing new candidates.

Why is this "new" news?? Any city with more than a couple million people is going to have an increased amount crime. I see the reports too about all the Louisiana gangs etc...but it's something that people have to live with. I live in Hyde Park (Montrose) and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in town. Just don't be in condition white nor put yourselves in a position to be a victim.

My old college roommate who is an LEO in League City said that HPD would send cops to Galveston for training, as it had a higher per capita crime rate than Houston. I grew up in Galveston (BOI) and I didn't really believe him. This was back in the mid 90's, so maybe it's different now.

There is a crime rate comparison on the web done by the National Association of Realtor (IIRC) here.

Looking at crimes per 100,000 people, Galveston is lower on every crime indicated, except for rape, which is 4 times higher than for Houston, which gives Galveston a slightly higher crime lab index (287 to Houston's 278). Those numbers, BTW are expressed as the persentage of the national average, so they both have nearly 3 times the crime per 100,000 people as the national average.
