A Lancaster police officer was killed in a shootout tonight along with two other people. Details are still sketchy, but it was a domestic disturbance call (often a cop's worst nightmare). Please keep the Lancaster PD and the family of the slain officer in your prayers. There are difficult days ahead for all them.

One of the dead is the son of the new chief for Dallas PD.
Still no word on the thrid person.

text story as well as a short video of the crime scene and the Lancaster
Police gathered at a press conference about their fellow officer's demise.

The criminal actor in this crime was the 27 year old son of the newly-appointed
Dallas Police Chief. This young man had been arrested for a marijuana offense
in 2003 and in May 2010 the father had commented on how his son had
turned his life around.

Rest in peace Officer Shaw. Your place in the thin blue line will be missed.

This whole even is certainly sad; to have two innocent families destroyed on Father's day. Not knowing what other trouble the shooter has been in I would guess it is significant. You have to feel for Chief Brown also. When it's all said and done I would guess the shooter is involved in drugs.

Sorry for the losses... This also shows you that you never know when something like this can happen. Today, we are never completely safe. Mr. McMillian and his family innocently drove into the complex for a Father's day celebration. Sad for all.

Condolences for the Officer's family as well as the Chief's family. I hope that this would not cause conflict between DPD and LPD. This is a very sad situation.

Officer Shaw was the father of two children.

One of my co-worker's fathers is a DFW area LEO who
trains SWAT teams and knew the deceased Officer Shaw.
He recounted to me more details of this incident and I will recount
them here to give everyone an idea about how this incident
went down.

Officer Shaw was a SWAT-trained officer and was Lancaster
Police Dept's "first responder" to the most dangerous calls.

The BG, Brown, found out that his girlfriend was either "cheating"
on him, or had rebuffed him completely in favor of a new man.
He was enraged.
Brown had an AK-47/similar gun and he tried to kill the new boyfriend.
The new man ran away, then drove away, and was not hit by any of Brown's rounds.

Brown, completely enraged at the love triangle, and having missed
killing the new man, simply walked into the parking lot and killed
the first person he encountered. The 23 year old male victim was in no way
connected to Brown or the girlfriend. He was driving a Ford Taurus and
was with his wife in the passenger seat, and 2 small children in the rear.
The gunman shot multiple times into the driver's door, killing the innocent
man, but somehow missing the wife and the children.

Witnesses saw all the shooting going on, then saw Brown (the BG) get into
his Dodge Stratus. Officer Shaw was the first LPD officer on site. He knew
that there was an active shooter, but didn't know who it was. As he was
driving into the apartment complex, a lady pointed out to Shaw the BG attempting
to drive out of the parking lot. Apparently Shaw felt that he had to engage this
BG immediately, before he could escape to possibly go on his killing rampage
elsewhere.

At this time, Shaw exited his cruiser, taking cover by the right rear quarter,
as the Dodge approached from the opposite direction. The gunfight began.
It's not known who fired first. Brown was firing his AK from the driver's
seat of the Dodge. Shaw was firing a Glock handgun. Officer Shaw was
hit in the head by at least one round, which killed him. He was about 6'4",
and 240 pounds, a big man.

At least 2 of Officer Shaw's backup officers were close behind him and
also engaged the BG immediately upon their arrival. It is estimated that
Brown and his Dodge Stratus were hit by 45 rounds.

This account is accurate to the best of my reporting skills. Keep in mind
that I got this from someone who is close to LEO sources, but may not
be completely verified by any official incident reports from the Lancaster,
Texas police department.
