I just got a campus alert (UTD is where I work)
ALERT: Safety Advisory—Robbery Reported

A UT Dallas student was robbed at gunpoint at approximately 1:00 a.m., June 26, 2010. The offense took place in a parking lot of the Waterview Apartments.

The student was apparently followed from an ATM machine in the City of Dallas in the area of Spring Valley and Coit Road into the parking lot by the suspects who are believed to have observed him making a deposit. The suspects struck the victim and demanded his wallet and cell phone. Upon taking his property, the suspects fled in a vehicle, described below.

Suspect Information: Two black males wearing light-colored shirts and light-colored baggy shorts. One suspect wore a light-colored baseball style hat. They were accompanied by a black female with shoulder-length, dyed brown hair who stepped out of the car to let the male suspects get back in the car. She was wearing a shirt that appeared to be black and red. Richardson and Plano police departments have reported similar offenses over the last few weeks.
Vehicle information: Red Nissan Altima

BE ALERT

Remain aware of your surroundings at all times.
Avoid using ATMs in unattended locations after dark, especially while alone.
Use campus ATMs in the Student Union when possible.
Call 911 if you believe you are being followed, and ask for assistance. Do not drive to an unattended parking lot or your apartment.
The UT Dallas Police Department provides security escorts upon request.
But whatever you do, DO NOT arm yourself. THAT would be wrong! :banghead:

This may seem a silly question but...what good is an alert that comes some 10 hours after the attack? :headscratch

... robbed at gunpoint at approximately 1:00 a.m., ...
The student was apparently followed from an ATM machine...
Yeah, like that was totally unexpected. Who knew that armed robbers roam the streets of Dallas at night? :grumble

And for whomever wrote this piece of bureaucratese: the phrase ATM machine is redundant. ATM means automated teller machine.

They circulate these alerts to avoid being sued by the next crime victim. There is a history of universities trying to cover up crimes on campus, and victims suing because they supposedly had no clue that crimes happen on campus.
