Drove through NM last year on family trip to Kalifornia. The one big difference that stuck in my mind is the restriction to only carry one concealed gun at a time. Also seems to me there is some extra restriction regarding restaurants that serve alcohol, but I may be confused.

That handgunlaw site is very helpful and a good starting point, but it's always best to go to the source if possible and find the actual state statutes on a State of New Mexico web site.

July 1st brought a big change to NM carry law - it is now legal to carry concealed with a license in restaurants serving alcohol on-premise, as long as they make 60% of their profit from food. They're supposed to have signs posted if it's not allowed to carry (like our 51% signs), but after two days of legality I doubt many places will be accurately posted yet. ALL business which sell alcohol, on or off premises, require concealed carry; even though open carry is legal almost everywhere else, no open carry in those locations.

I don't think any state has signs "like" our 30.06 or 51% signs. Each state has their own version of signage as pertains to CC in their state. Check it out on http://www.handgunlaw.us/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

As of yesterday, there should be a new sign for restaurants, saying carry is OK with a permit, but I have no idea what it looks like yet. I was just stating that many locations that are now legal for carry probably haven't posted them yet.

One vagary of New Mexico law is that you can only carry one concealed gun on your person. So you can open carry a gun on your hip and a concealed BUG, but if concealed carry is more your thing you can't carry both a primary and a BUG concealed. This doesn't apply to vehicles; they are considered an extension of your home and you can carry as many guns as you like however you like.

I'm not sure how much this law is actually enforced. It seems like it is more of an add-on charge or something to charge you with if the police can't find something else (sort of like San Antonio's lockblade ordinance), but it is something to be aware of.

Signs like this make my head itch. The say that the person doing X is guilty of this or that. What happened to the presumption of innocence?

I am going to be traveling to albequerque this weekend and I was curious of some information I heard. I know it's perfectly legal to carry in NM with a Texas CHL but I heard that since it is an open carry state that the authorities actually prefer for Texas chlers to open carry as well. I tried looking up info on this but it was very vague. Does anyone know if there is any merit to this claim? Thanks

I think you might have been getting some outdated advice.
It wasn't long ago that NM didn't recognize our CHL, so the only way to legally carry was to open carry. and on the Dashboard if possible while driving. This simply isn't the case any more, the authorities recognize our CHL. While concealed you are just not likely to draw attention to yourself. I wouldn't open carry in Albequerque or Sante Fe. They are different than the rest of New Mexico.

I open carried when I visited my dad in ABQ. I never had a problem anytime I open carry there. The worst crap I ever get is from my own dad, who is a recent convert.
