In a previous thread on another subject some strong negative opinons of the XDM line came up

I would love to hear the specifics of the opinions on the XD and XDMs

Although I've never heard of it happening, I will speculate that it is possible for the grip safety to break or fail in some manner that would prevent the gun from firing. Which understandably is the worst thing to happen when your life is on the line.

I have never heard of a problem with an XD or XDm grip safety. The only potential problems I can see with the grip safety is that someone will grip the weapon incorrectly and it not fire or that someone will attempt to modify the grip safety rendering it inoperative. I have owned one XD and currently own two XDm pistols, none have had any issues. Point out any gun from any manufacturer and I can show you something to complain about. I don't own, nor have I ever owned a Glock but I do recommend them to some people based on FACTS. If you want an XD or XDm then get one, if you want a 1911, or a Glock, or a Sig, or a Beretta, or a Smith & Wesson, or a Ruger then get one. You will not go wrong buying a quality firearm from any major name brand manufacturer. My only advice is to make sure the gun fits you, your needs, and your intended application.

Well, I don't know. But I do know that the Grip Safety on the XD is slightly smaller than on most 1911's.
Honestly though, I used to own a XD40sc and practiced quick drawing a lot and there was never a time
that I failed to disengage the safety.

Recently sold a Kimber TLE RLII and plan to use the $$ to buy an XDM 45

The kimber I sold is MUCH more dangerous than the XDM's Ive test fired ...

I have an XD (and a 1911) and have never had a problem

The XDM's and XD's are wonderful guns IMO. The one I had absolutely positively never jammed
or failed to eject with any ammo I used. It was utterly reliable and I really enjoyed shooting it.

The only reason I sold it was to put the $$ towards a new Kimber.

The kimber I sold had a "worked" trigger and I simply didnt trust it

I was third owner ... Its new owner loves the trigger ...

A gun is only as dangerous as the person handling it! I have seen ADs from pretty much every type of handgun actions with the gamut of safety features. They have all been operator error. I have yet to see a gun go bang by itself.

I have an XD .45. It was my very first pistol I ever owned and really shot (hence my name).

It works flawlessly. I have never had a problem with it. It eats anything and everything that I feed it with no complaining. No jams no FTF or FTE and it shoots great and is very accurate.

The only thing I can see about the grip safety is what was mentioned above...not gripping it correctly. However, as USA1, I too practice quick draws and defensive draws with it and have yet to improperly grip the safety.

The XD line are GREAT guns and IMO you cannot go wrong with one. If that is the gun you are looking at then by all means get it. You will NOT be disappointed.

I do not like BLOCK but that does not mean that they are not reliable and good guns. They do not fit me and they are just not my taste. I could easily say that the GLOCK is a bad gun because it can discharge easy because of no safety. Is that true...no. Guns are as safe as you make them.

I do not carry my XD daily as I have a 1911 that is easier to conceal in a wider array of clothing. However, my XD is my "tactical" gun. Its on the nightstand and everytime I am out hiking or in the woods I have the XD. So, I trust my life with my XD just as much as I do with my 1911.

BLUF, XD are GREAT, RELIABLE and ACCURATE guns. If this is the way you want to go but you are worried about the grip safety, get the gun and practice. You will be surprised at how with a proper shooting grip the safety disengages and the gun is ready for action.

Let me clear up my previous statement, I said it could fail, not that it would. Any mechanical device that is not properly maintained can fail. I know of at least one police officer who carries a Glock that had a failure, which prevented the gun from firing, due to excessive lint building up in the scissor style trigger safety. I am glad they discovered the issue when they were at the range and not depending on the gun to save their life.

Ouch!!! My Buds would never let me live that one down.
But to keep with the OP, I have/had 3 XD's 2 in .40 (gone) one in 9mm (wifes). I never had any problems, she was easy to break down and clean, lots of aftermarket toys. Only thing for me was the grip. I have short fingers and wide hands. XL glove for the hand and Med for the fingers. A 1911 fits me perfect but the double stacks are a tough fit.
