OK, maybe I'm dumb or uninformed. All I hear about these days is how well a particular gun fits or carries in "cargo pockets." Now I have lots of shorts/pants with cargo pockets, and all of them have either velcro or buttons holding them closed, and quite tightly. They are also low on the leg. Does anyone know of a movie clip of the routine one has to go through in drawing quickly in a self-defense situation from a cargo pocket? I gotta see this

i tried carrying my s&w 442 in the cargo pocket of my shorts and it was uncomfortable to say the least. all the weight makes it swing around and hit stuff all the time. it helps to have the grip upward so its easier to draw. its really something you have to practice.

Agreed, but it seems to me that getting the pocket open presents the biggest drawback as it would slow things down considerably. I'm of the opinion that folks carry there because it "fits." I'd like to be shown I'm wrong. I just can't figure out how to get the weapon out quickly.

for me i would just reach into the pocket between the buttons and draw without opening the pocket. depending on the size of the gun this will work but if its too large you will have to open the pocket up.

I like the cargo pocketed pants/shorts - more for comfort and the extra pockets than anything. I tried the 'pocket carry' in the cargo pocket with my airlite 360 and a sticky holster but it just turns sideways in the pocket and, as mentioned, just hard to get past the flap. I now use the cargo pocket for extra speed strips and when pocket carrying, use the upper pocket like normal.

Of course - now every old guy that looks like me wearing cargo pants I'll be thinking they have a weapon on board.

I loves me some cargo pants/shorts. But the snubby stays in the "regular" pocket.

I wore "jorts" for years
until my kids informed me that they weren't cool anymore.

If I'm carrying the Kel-Tec .380 and I'm going to be in the car, I sometimes will drop it in the cargo pockets because I would be able to get to it a whole lot faster than if it was in my normal pockets.

Well, I use the 5.11 cargo shorts, both the longer leg style and the academy shorter leg style. I carry my XD9SC in a Ross leather pocket holster. Carries and conceals fine and easy to draw.

What holds your cargo pockets closed? Can you describe your drawing from this pocket? Maybe it's just me, but all of my cargo pants pockets require effort to open them - quickly.

We used to just call them "cutoffs".

I carry in the cargo pocket of both pants and shorts. Frankly, I don't typically feel I am in a situation where I have to be able to pull and shoot in one motion. If I move from an environment where I feel it is a bit more questionable I move my firearm up to my main pocket where it is very comfortable. Most of my attire that has cargo pockets has very large main pockets also.

I know we can't plan for what might happen and need quicker access but I can address my access based on my situational awareness. Hard to do much more. I am going for good concealment as well as access.

I use the cargo pouches for my cell phone, keys, and wallet so I can completely free up the waistband and front and back pockets for my arsenal. Sure cargo pouches aren't very practical for stowing and drawing firearms, but they're great for everything else. And when my smart phone is tucked in a cargo pouch my cell carrier doubles as an extra magazine holder. We need a forehead tap smiley.
