New CHL in Houston

My name is Matt and I live in Houston. I just got my CHL in June and carry on the weekends and keep a pistol in my truck during the week. I can't legally carry at work (30-06 reg) so I don't.

I would like some advice on a mag pouch. Currently I carry a SIG P239 SAS (gen 2) 9mm. The P239 is single stack 8 rounds. I have had trouble locating a decent single stack mag pouch. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for the help and I look forward to taking part in the group.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks for the replies!

I have the Galco summer holster (leather). I perfer leather. Kinda of personal thing, I like metal guns and leather holsters. Must be from Texas.

Several here that I know the quality leather. Nothing wrong w/ the Galco rig you have.
They ought to have a good mag pouch & a pretty fast ship date.
Others that I know are good. Lead time should be stated on their web site.

Well I hate to disappoint you, but Galco holsters are made in Arizona.

Nothing wrong with them though. I own 2 IWB, 2 OWB, and a shoulder holster all from Galco. They're a very well made product.

LOL, I meant I must be from Texas. Nothing wrong w/ AZ though, better than a lot of other states.

Longtooth, thank you for all the link. I am looking through them now, might take me a while. I will post my decision

Thanks again!

I have Galco and really like it.

My other non-leather option is a Fobus paddle holster. It is a little more bulky than the galco tho.

Welcome to the forum Matt :tiphat:
Nice gun you have there.

It looks like LT has got you covered pretty well with you're looking for.
I might also add that E-Bay is another good source to browse.
Sometimes you can find really good deals on mag pouches as well as holsters.

I had the same problem with single mag pouches for my 1911. I'm a knife collector and I went through all the knife scabbards in the safe and one of my smaller Puma lock blades had a nylon one that fit perfect. You probably need something open top but this one had a velcro flap. If you're in the Houston area the Arms Room in League City has quite a few.

Lately, I have just been carrying a spare mag in the lower pocket of my cargo shorts. I really don't need more stuff clipped to my belt right now. It is tight enough as it is.

I ordered a couple of external leather double mag holders for a couple of other guns I have from Ebay: CZ 75D PCR 9mm and the Bersa .380. Got a good deal price wise but we'll see whey they get here (both were $30 each w/ free shipping). The mag pouches are Tagua sold by Holster World. They are hand made in Paraguay according to the add.

I like the CZ 75D but its bulker than the P239 and I think I will carry it when it is cold but with a sweatshirt over it.

For the Sig P239 I am going to order and IWB single mag from http://www.brigadegunleather.com/m-20c.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;[/url] . Thanks for the link Longtooth!

Just too muddy the waters a bit, I know a lot of people are not in favor of 9mm but for smaller guns they are better for me (btw I am 6'00", 196 lbs.). If one wants to keep the speed and accuracy w/ a small gun the caliber size goes down. I am dead on accurate w/ a small 9mm but have not found a .40 S&W that I have the same performance with. I am unwilling to sacrifice proficiency just for the sake of a larger caliber (and I personally know many that do!). I do have a Walther P99 .40 S&W but am not crazy about it and I think I will trade it in for a Sig P226 .40 S&W or something else. When I feel I possess the same level of skill w/ a smaller .40 I will certainly buy that gun but until then I am carrying a 9mm. I have no doubt there are many out there that are highly skilled w/ large caliber small pistol but I am just not there yet or have not found the right gun. I welcome any feedback on this point.

Regards! :tiphat:

You are welcome & glad to help.
What is the lead time on your mag carrier from brigade?

I know there are some out there that will say you are under armed if the caliber does not start w/ a 4. Not so & I dont know any on this board that seriously believe that. I stated in my 1st post to you that you had made a very good carry choice & I believe you will find that to be the concensis of vast majority of folks on this board.

first welcome!

The 239 is a nice carry gun. I used to have one and miss it. When ever my renewal gets here Im going to carry a HK P7 i got and/or an HK P30 for now. As for mag pouches and gear Longtooth gave some awesome links. I have a single leather mag pouch I believe is made by Galco that has a metal clip and clips IWB. I dont think they make it anymore as I got it in a trade some time back. I wish i could find a few more because that mag pouch is great.

I digress....anyway Im a huge fan of Kramer leather holsters and mag pouches. I dont know what the wait time is now but its great stuff. For production holsters/mag pouches I use Galco leather and have been very happy.

Thanks for you insight LT.

There is almost a year back order on the brigadegunleather site. Looks like those guys are pretty busy these days. Can't imagin why.

One comment on Maximus' post, if I like a gun I don't think I would sell it. Seems like you get only half of your money back (depends on who you sell it to). Maybe I don't have enough guns to say that (5 pistols, 2 shot guns, 2 rifles). Each gun that I buy has a purpose. I love my CZ 75 Compact 9mm, CZ 452 bolt action .22LR rifle (buy this gun you'll love it!!!), Sig Mosquito .22LR (it improves w/ age), my 2 870s 12G (Wingmaster and an Express made into a Police model), Sig 239 9mm, and even the Bersa .380 was a good buy. The Walther P99 I was never crazy about and so it might get sold. As I am sure is the case with most of the people on this board, I just like guns, LOL.

There are other guns that are on the list to buy:
Remington 700 .380
Sig 226 .40 S&W
Kahr K-9 9mm
AR-15, make TBD
Shotgun over and under make TBD
1911 .45 make TBD

Enjoying the discussion.
