I'm looking to get back into security work here in the Eastern DFW area. I have 13 years from NC and SC, all armed. I'm aware that I am able to get the Level II and III training on my own and am looking for any recommendations for good places for the training and any intel on which companies are good and which are maybe not as good.

I saw one training company website that said if you qualify with a revolver, you are stuck with only a revolver (like the CHL). Is that true?

Anything you guys can post or send via PM (in case you want to badmouth your employer ) would be greatly appreciated by myself and my Fiancee (who is ready for me to get out of the house every day).

Yes, there is a DPS rule that says the officer may only carry with the type (SA or NSA) that he is trained and qualified with.

I've looked all over the DPS site and never found the SA/NSA rule. I only found one instance of the auto/revolver rule anywhere on the web (so far)

The state regs in NC limited us to the exact firearm by serial number that we qualified with (since they are required to be company owned, not a real big issue)

SC was limited by caliber. I could certify someone on a Glock 21 and they could switch to a 1911 (as long as the company was ok, of course).

There is nothing in the law other than the rule I posted (general type of weapon qualified with). In the security field, I have never seen a restriction other than that, mostly because the salary is low enough that companies can't be too picky in this area. I have seen some companies that issue weapons and don't make sure you get the same one each day.

And there are companies that will restrict you to the one they qualified you with, no matter what the state lets you do. The potential liability hit to them if you use something else is too great.

Understood, just was wondering from the state's point of view. I've been on the company end of allowing people to carry a certain weapon (and the actual issue ammo, but that is another funny story ).

If it was a .38 Special revolver, .357 Mag rounds physically will not fit in the gun.
