Move to TX from Michigan

Hello everyone,
I am moving to College Station from Michigan. I presently have a Michigan CPL (CCW, CHL, whatever the appropriate letter are). I have over 4 years left on my license. How quickly do I need to switch to a Texas CHL? Is there a time frame (30 days, 60 days, when my license expires, etc)?

Well, since Texas honors your Michigan license, I would imagine that as soon as it expires, you no longer may carry unless you have a Texas license. I doubt there is any 'grace 'period on it.

I might be wrong about this, but I'll take a chance anyway and say that the validity of your Michigan resident permit would depend on whether or not you become a Texas resident. Once you do become a Texas resident, I think that invalidates your Michigan resident permit. So if I were you, I would set about getting your CHL as soon as possible. I forget if Texas requires 60 or 90 days of residency before you can obtain a Texas CHL.
But don't take my word on any of this. Hopefully, one of our resident CHL instructors will step in here and clear it up for you.

Texas requires you to be a resident for six-months before applying for a CHL.(GC411.172)

Thank everyone... I figured that once I was a Texan again that I would need a Texas CHL... Even if having a Michigan CPL is valid, it seems like I could avoid confusion by getting the Texas CHL.

Texas no longer has a 6 month residency requirement, even though it still remains in Tex. Gov't Code §411.172. All that is necessary is that you intend to become a Texas resident. Tex. Gov't Code §411.173(a)
If Michigan doesn't cancel or revoke your license when you move to Texas, then you can carry on it until it expires. I would still recommend that you get a Texas CHL.

Texas also issues nonresident concealed handgun licenses but you have to take the class in Texas.

Yep, definitely could avert some misunderstandings with a Texas DL and Texas CHL versus a Texas DL and an out-of-state permit.
Plus every Texas CHL holder is a potential issue voter we can point to when trying to improve the gun laws here.

I took my class and sent in my application as soon as I got my DL after I moved here.
As Charles said, there is no length of residency required, only the intention to become a resident.
Personally, I would not carry with out a TX lisence for too long (how long is up to you) because if necessity dictates use of your gun, you only complicate the situation.
