Our ol' buddy Lawdog has a classic essay about the mindset needed to survive. Okay, it's more of a rant... but it's still a must-read.

Perhaps I stand corrected. I'm now one of those people that don't like to go places without my gun.
OTOH, I'm not a very large person. I have a difficult time picturing myself neutralizing a human threat with my shoelaces, especially on short notice.

A gun is just an extended projection of force. Now you can reach beyond knife range or striking range. It doesn't provide any extra security unless you are as aware of your surroundings as any other time, because it does no good sitting in the holster while you get stabbed from behind.

Being one of those people who also hates to go anywhere without a firearm, I understand the discomfort others feel when going to "weapons(sic)-free" zones.

But even though I almost always have a pistol at my side, I never, ever, treat it as the only tool in my box. I worry that too many carriers do think that way, and want to start reaching for the gun first.

1. Avoid
2. Retreat
3. De-escalate
4. Attempt non-lethal options
5. Center mass

Was told a long time ago that the most powerful weapon in the world, is mans mind.
